World in Conflict is a real-time tactic game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment. The game is set in 1989, where economic troubles, similar to the ones that occurred in real-life, cripple the Soviet Union to the extent where it must risk nuclear armageddon to stay in power.

Overview
World in Conflict

West Germany, 1988. To avoid certain collapse, the Soviet army boldly advances into Europe. NATO responds only to be met on a second front -- a diversionary attack on the American homeland. You are a field commander, leading the era's most powerful military machines in the campaign to retake America's cities and suburbs.
Superpowered Warfare      Unleash the arsenals of the great military superpowers in the gripping single-player story created by best-selling author and Cold War authority, Larry Bond.    MassTech Engine      The latest version of Massive's proprietary engine allows for a full 360 range of camera control, allowing you to get right down into the midst of battle.    Demolish Everything      Destroy every object in the game - crush cars, destroy buildings, burn forests!    Drop-in Multiplayer      Join on-going games and immediately help your team take control of the map.    Fast-paced Teamplay      Master four different battlefield roles; Air, Armor, Infantry and Support, in the ultimate online teamplay experience.      Super Weapons      Unleash ground-shaking artillery barrages, napalm strikes, and awesome tactical nukes that turn the tide of battle.

In a recent interview, Massive Entertainment revealed that there will be no base-building or resource gathering in the game. Instead, players will be given a pre-determined amount of in-game credit to buy units with. When a unit is destroyed, the points used to purchase it are slowly filtered back to the player: thus reinforcements can be summoned to the fray. In terms of gameplay World in Conflict seems to be the spiritual successor to Ground Control, doing away with many of the changes - for example resource gathering - that made Ground Control II more of a traditional RTS game.

One of the new features is a system where the player may choose a one of four roles in battle: infantry, air, support or armor. Specialized units will only be available to one of them. More basic units can be purchased by everyone, but are more expensive for players with the wrong roles.

Another new concept are 'tactical aids'. Much like the Generals powers in Command & Conquer: Generals, tactical aids, when accumulated, allow the player to call in airstrikes, deploy paratroopers or order the dropping of a nuke. In order to balance the game, however, Massive Entertainment have stated that the nuclear bomb is only of tactical size and will be very hard to acquire more than once in a single game.

The three factions currently confirmed to be in-game are the USA, the Soviet Union, and NATO.

The game's designers have cited the 1984 film Red Dawn as one of their key influences. The film's main premise is the invasion of America by Soviet and Central American troops. Echoes of the film can be seen in the initial paratroop landings (though in the film they happen in Colorado) and in the use of civilian transport to disguise a Soviet invasion force; again, this differs slightly from the film. Tom Clancy's novel Red Storm Rising is likely to have elements drawn from it; it depicts a conventional war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in West Germany, though much of the action takes place at sea. An added factor is that the co-author of the book, Larry Bond, is the main consultant for the World in Conflict team.

I've been watching the progress of this game for about 3 months now.  Looks phenomenal (almost as good as the Shadowrun game you posted about a few days ago).  Definitely getting this whenever it comes out.

I hate RTS but this might be ok, this is better than something like C&C because of the no resource building, personally, I just like to have the units given to me, and Im given a objective, my job is get that objective with the smallest amount of casualties possible, because if I have a lot of casualties, I wont have the ability to use those units which were deplete and/or destroyed in previous encounters with the enemy.

This is a bit different than your typical RTS. The teamplay is really involved. It is a group of guys on one side working together highly dependent on each other, it is crucial you make the right decisions for your team.

Players can only be the USA, am i correct?

While the game already looks sweet, i would LOVE to be able to use the Soviets.

Ok, well here are some more snidbits about this game:
You can choose several types of "classes" Air Support, Infantry, Support (arty strikes), and Armor. The game is heavily targeted to the BF2 and CSS crowd, with the ability to have up to 16 players (twice as any other RTS game). You also have the ability to drop in and out of a game, like you would with Bf2 or CSS. Voice over IP is provided and other ways to communicate if you don't have a mic.
In the Multiplayer, you can play as the Soviets or the USA, but its news to me about Nato, and in the SP, you get a story line with both the USA and USSR. However, as you might have noticed, the game is all about the multiplayer. Since you get funds to get units and they are refunded when units die, the way to victory is by controlling points on the map. There are nodes, and controlling these nodes gets your control of a point, control a point and you're on your way to winning, provided you control a lot of the points, I'm assuming. I'm a bit shaky on that myself.
Tactical aids vary on the "class" (Air, Inf, Amror, Support)
Maps are completely destructible, and will be by the end of the game.

Looks awesome overall.

Indeed: Q&A: World in Conflict's Nicklas Cederstrom

GS AU: The single-player game only focuses on US. Was there any discussion about including the Russians?

NC: We talked about it early on, but when push came to shove, we decided to focus on one campaign. For me and many of the guys at Massive, the key line from World in Conflict is that war is coming home. And home for many is the US, because we are all so familiar with their culture, and we have seen it all in movies. So having the Russians invading the US, that was the core of the game in my opinion.

Well I have some good news, N.A.T.O. will be a fully playable faction in the Multiplayer. Also, the battles will be USSR vs US, NATO vs USSR. No Nato vs US or US vs US.
And Nato units will be usable in the SP, but not be a separate faction (in the SP)

Holy shit this game owns!!!

The game that was at the top of my want list for this year was crysis, without a question. But now after having played WiC, I might have to move crysis down a notch.

Let me just say that in one long round alone there were 4 nuke strikes. 2 of those both went off in the same spot at the same time from 2 different players. It was fuckin' insane.
