All the other mentioned power supplies are good, but I looove this one, full modular support is a huge plus...

decent sounding 7.1 surround sound speakers for under a hundred dollars.  They've lasted me almost two years so far and are still going strong.  Have to have an x-fi card to get them to work well though

4. How do I apply thermal paste to the CPU.  Do I just rub a small amount of it on the surface of the CPU?

the heatsink should already have thermal paste applied , on mine i just took off a protective layer on the heatsink and it stuck straight to the CPU, no probs at all 35C max CPU temp

The speakers look nice.  I think I'll get them instead.  But about the PSU, is it ok that the fan is on top of the PSU, whereas it would be hitting the top of my case?

Just flip it over so the fan points down and it's all good. Or if you felt like doing some modding you could cut a vent in the top of your case, but the first option is easier.

Oh... I didn't know I could just flip it over...  That makes searching easier.

yes i see your concern, but i wouldnt go with the 150gig raptor, go smaller if you can, less expensive, i had the same one, had many problems with it, they replaced it, and still had mayn problems but thats just me..i personally cant tell the diference between a 7400rpm and a 10,000 rpm but
I just looked up prices and with a rebate, the 150GB is about $170, but some 74GB are about $140.  I'll pay $30 to double up on harddrive space.  Thanks for your input though.

The Razor is slightly cheaper and has one more button.  And I prefer the look of the Razor .
ive had both the razer and g5 for a long time, and the g5 outperforms the razer anyday.  the razer is a horrible design and feels akward in any hand, unless its a really small hand.the razers also die.  (the laser just stops working)

Personally, I can't stand having my mouse tethered by a wire. Any insignificant advantage in response time a wired mouse has is negated by having to drag a wire around.

Wireless mice have reached the point where they perform as well as wired mice, and it has been that way since the MX700. Anyone who says they can notice a difference is full of shit.

Ok can we stop the mouse debate.  Please make your own thread should you wish to continue discussion on wireless vs. wired.  I like wired and I plan to stick with wired for now.  Also, the OP has been updated.

About thermal paste being the best on the market, one can argue. A fact is, that Arctic Silver 5 owns almost every thermal pad out there, except for liquid metal pads, which happen to destroy aluminium surfaces from time to time (no joke) and except for pads made from carbon nano-capillary tubes, but that's another story.
For when it comes to applying thermal paste between a heatsink/processor, I'd rather suggest spreading it on the processor, as it is socketed already and you can mostly access it easily. So put a tiny bit of thermal paste on a CPU (if it's not out of the box and had been touched already or if there had been any thermal compounds applied previously, cleaning the IHS with alcohol is highly recommended) and spread it there with something that has got a clean, undamaged edge, like a razorblade or soemthing of this kind (the piece of metal you break out of the case to insert an expansion card also worked for me ). Now, you're only supposed to add a tiny little bit of thermal paste, if it's about the size of the head of a 5mm LED that's more than enough, it would be surely nice to cut the amount of thermal paste to the half, if possible. If you've got a brushed heatsink contact, you might aswell apply some thermal paste there on the bottom and polish it away with some paper towel so that the tiny structure gets filled with thermal paste. If the HS is polished on the bottom, just screw this tip

Yeah, it's a huge amount they put on the bottom as well.

You're not supposed to spread the thermal paste out. Rather, you're supposed to but a small dot in the middle (about the size of a BB or a grain of white rice) and then put the HSF on. Only the core of the CPU makes enough heat to worry about, and that core is located right in the middle. Spreading it around won't do any good and it might even get thin spots once you secure the HSF. Remember, it is very tight and the paste will get squished.

Once you squish that dot, it spreads out perfectly.

Well, if you've got the skill, there's absolutely not point in not spreading the thermal paste. Especially, since you could well be so unlucky and end up with a slightly tilted heatsink and thus inappropriately squished, as you nicely put it. Also you have to remember that this works better with ceramique or silicone thermal pastes than with metal pastes, as they tend to be a little more compact. Moreover, you can of course control the thickness of the paste layer better when it's spread and as thermal paste is not that expensive (you don't need much anyways) it might also improve the overall cooling performance when the whole IHS is covered with it. Of course, the major heat source is the processor core which is centered, but quad-cores, for example, are not that centered as a "traditional" C2D is.
My point is, that you get some extre cooling performance from spreading the thermal paste and that you can actively control the thickness of the layer. It's also quite some fun if you're a bit into PCs, so - why not give it a try! If you constantly end up with blank spots, just do that dot trick...

And btw: If you were not supposed to spread out thermal paste, why would Zalman then advise you to do so in their heatsink installation manuals?

Just for some final thoughts

If and extra $100 can be spared you could get this monitor (I have it and it's beautiful) SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms 3000:1

You could also probably shave a few dollars off if you get a cheaper case such as P180 ($90) or many others

Also, I would highly recommend you get a G5 since they feel far better than the Razer

Also, do you have a keyboard because I don't see one on that list.

I can't afford that monitor at the moment, but it'll be a nice upgrade in the future.  I think I will get a G5 because everyone is so adamant that it is better.  Also, I have a G15 Keyboard already (I think I said that in the OP), so I don't need a keyboard.

Get a P35 board like the Gigabyte GA P35-DS4. You say you don't want Sli particuarly, and thats why you're paying a premium for that board. P35 can have (officially) a FSB of 1333MHz and handle 1066mhz memory. You'll be sorted for the future aswell, with Penryn coming out.

That particular Gigabyte board holds its own against much more expensive boards and the heatsinks are second to none.

Trust me, its one for the future, but its good for today too!

Edit: OK, cant find it on Newegg, but its out in the UK, so you should be able to find it somewhere in the US! Its about £100 over here, so you should be able to find it under $200.

How comes you've got two DVDReaders/Burners?

Hm yeah, if you'll never ever plan on getting SLi, a P35 board should really do very well. But they've obviosuly not been released in the US by now, yet, I could take a walk of about 5 minutes and buy one at my nearest computer store where they've already got (and also sold) these boards... Hmpf :-/
