I got 20mb broadband and a D-link DGL 4300 (gaming router) i have it wired to my PC (1gb Ethernet - which is fine) and my two house mates have wireless.
One has a D-link xtreme card or something like that, and it works fine (connects at 104 Mbps to the router and full speed to the net)
And the other has a new D-link card as well, but that connects to the router at 54 Mbps, but seems slower than 56k on the net.
I'm thinking its an OS problem, so is it worth replacing his copy of media centre (on a 9month old dell) with a copy of XP pro???

Iv tried:
Firmware (both router and card)
Resetting the router to factory default
Copying the settings from one house mates pc to the other
Deleting the connection /networks and starting again.
I've moved his pc next to the router, to check it wasn't interference or out of range.

It will download windows updates, very slowly, but wont download anything else.
He has an ethernet port on the back, but even wired connection seems dodgy.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm OK when it comes to fixing computers, but networking isn't my speciality and I've tried all that I can think of.
Cheers

Try scanning for any virus or spyware/ adware- they can take up a lot, a lot of bandwith.

Also try disabling background tasks that will use the internet.

What AV/ Firewall have you got- some firewalls/ AV slow down the internet considerably, trying to stop virus' / hackers getting into your system.

And what speed does he actually download at?
