hey im just buyin some new ram, but i did a search for compatible ram and it came up with this:
Kingston - Memory - 1 GB - DIMM 184-pin - DDR - 333 MHz / PC2700
I have this on order right now but its on back order so i can change it if i can find somthing better qucik
i'd rather get some dual channel shit but how do i figure out if its compatible with my comp.
I have a hp pavillion a320n right now. i want some stuff i can also transfer into my new comp when i decide to order it.
Any help or advice would be much appriciated.

only problem i can see is if u searchd exactly that then it might not be compatible with YOUR motherboard.....   if thats the case then i recomend downloading a small program calld CPU-Z (google it), its free, in the program theres a memory tab and a SPD tab that u can click an it will tell u what ram u have in ur system, then u can simply order the same type an it will be compatible

OK thx i did the cpu-z thing and this is the memory info it came up with:
type: DDR-SDRAM
channels #: Dual
size: 512mb

so how do i use this to figure out the best ram i can get, im new to upgrading my comp so please bare with me...

What you need to do is find the make & model of your motherboard, you can do this by either looking in the BIOS post information when your computer starts up or looking on the motherboard itself, there should be a little imprint somewhere on it that tells you exactly what it is. Once you know what brand of motherboard and what precise make it is, go to the manufacturers website and find the technical specs, and either read them yourself or post all the relevant information here and ill get to it eventually. Judging by the manufacturer of your computer id say you have an intel board, but thats just speculation.

Secondly, you need to tell us what your current RAM is, if you plan on keeping it. ALL of the ram in your computer needs to run at the same speed, so if you have ddr 333 single channel stuff, and you put in some ddr400 dual channel, it will all have to run at the slower speed. I wouldnt recommend this.

Finally, what is your budget. If you have a good 200 bucks or so to spend on RAM you can buy a good 2 gb of ddr400 dual channel RAM, in 2 sticks. that should be enough to run whatever you plan on running.

Oh and id definitely not go with what you have on order right now. ddr333 single channel is relatively slow these days, and can actually be more expensive than the same amount of ddr400.

My mother board is:
ASUSTeK Computer inc.

My current ram is: Im not really sure but
2x 256mb DDR-SDRAM PC2700 dual channel

thats as far as i know, im not phased by throwing that out though, i might just give it to my brother anyway.
as for my budget im not worried by spending up to 300 CAD on 2 gigs of dual channel ram. I was only planning on getting 1gig now but whatever. i got the comp 2 years ago. did they have dual channel back then?

Im trying to look up the specifications for your motherboard right now. Sit tight.

From what i read your motherboard is sort of a piece of crap. no offense.
You might consider upgrading your motherboard as well as memory, you can buy a socket 478 mobo for about 50 bucks US$.

If you dont want to upgrade, it does look like your motherboard supports dual channel ddr 400. You can get 2 gigs for about 195 bucks US$, but im too lazy to convert that to canadian dollars.

yeah i figured it was crap i got my comp from futureshop 2.5 years ago and not for gaming.
no offence taken. ill probably have to get the mobo later, maybe when i get my new comp.
