Hi all

Ok, so I have made a few posts in the last few days regarding upgrading my PC. So I went down to my local store today and heres what they said.

Because I have a Intel P4 Prescot 3000 478-Pin. I will have to buy a new CPU if I am to upgrade to a PCI-E mobo. Because they dont make PCI-E mobos for my CPU. Now I am not sure if he is just trying to sell me a new CPU so he cant earn somemore cash!

So I need some help finding a mobo that is pci-e and compatable with my CPU. Ive looked on Ebuyer.com but dont seem to beable to find any

I dont want to have to buy a new CPU aswell, since I am goin to be buying 2x 1GB of Crucial RAM aswell. The fact is my CPU is decent and works fine. So it isnt a needed upgrade atm.

As a guide, my current mobo is a Foxconn 661FXME. My CPU is a P4 Prescot 3000 478-Pin. The new board has to be PCI-E.

Also, this shop is selling 2GB of Crucial RAM for £220. When I can get it from Crucial for £125

He also quoted me £212 for a PCI-E mobo and AMD 64 3000mhz or £50 labour charges if I find my own mobo.

As a guide

So I am asking if you people can help me find a mobo. So i dont get ripped of in my local store!

Many thanks

If you need anymore info, please ask

No more then £70 for a new mobo

The RAM will cost £130

and around £150 IF I need a new CPU.

Another problem is I dont intend to upgrade to PCI-E yet, Im just getting ready. So the board would need AGP/PCI-E combo. Ive seen a board for around £40 like this, bit it doesnt support my current cpu.

ok u do need a new cpu, but choose the p4 630, and sorry i havnt heard of a pci-E X16 and agp competible motherboard or are u talking about pci-e X4... just buy the components when u have a pci-e card imho

Thanks for the advice

Yet another problem I have is this;

I have a ATI 9600XT 256, but im not sure it is compatable with my Foxconn 661FXME mobo. I think this because when I have it set on 8X in the bios, the monitor stops responding when I play BF2 after about 15 mins. So I have had to change it to 4X in the bios and am not getting as good a graphics as I should be.

I have no idea why I can use it on 8X, but I guessing its becuase of my mobo. This is why I want to upgrade it.

also http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products … uid=100835 that is the agp/pci-E combo I saw

Thanks

hmmm good mobo but not good for future upgrades, why? it doesnt support DDR2, if u want just ddr, get an AMD socket K8 board is much more worth it, imho get a new vid card, like the nvidia 6600 series is a mid-range price, but its good

You should ask yourself: do I really -need- pci-e?

There's still lots of very good AGP cards out there, so if you want to cut some costs go for one of those.  If you buy hardware just as it goes off the market you'll get decent performance at -very- low costs.

i dont know why... but here in taiwan pci-e is cheaper than agp cards...

I understand what you both mean and I guess you are right. My only worry is that if I buy a new video card like the 6600, am I goin to have to set that to 4X because the montor will stop responding if I have it on 8X?

I dont know why my card doesnt work properly. Maybe its a known issue with the 9600XT. However, I have a 9600Xt on another PC and it works fine. No crashing or non responsive monitor. This card is on a Asus, newer mobo. With the same RAM, CPU and sound card.

So now I am thinking. It must be the mobo that dont like my video card. Its quite anoying not being able to make the most of what hardware I have. Thats why it is leading me into making a drastic decision like goin PCI-E, getting a new CPU and so on, when I probably dont need to yet. Im happy having the settings on Medium, but from time to time I notice a difference in quality even when the settings stay the same. I want to run my card on 8X not 4X.

hehe, So what do you recommend now?

I definatly goin to get 2gig RAM.

here is my current mobo

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/products_ … 661FXME-ES

Do you see any reason why I cant run my 9600XT 256 on 8X?

Kind Regards

Yeah thats a great site! thanks

Worked it out and Im looking at £520 ish for a cpu, mobo, 2x 1gb RAM (my current ram wont be compatable) and a pci-e 6600. That seems like a good system. I have that money but feel it is far more hardware then I need.

Back to basics. My 9600XT doesnt work properly. I have it on 4x instead of 8X because my monitor stops responding on 8X. I dont know why this is.

hehe, forget about new cpu's or RAM for a moment. Can you guys help me with my current card and why it doesnt work? bareing in mind my current setup and mobo.

I dont want to upgrade fully now, if I can get this card working. Maybe a new mobo if it means my 9600xt will work. I enjoy playing bf2 on my other pc, with another 9600xt and 1gig of RAM.

on karkand 64 server I get about 35 FPS. Just recently it starts and 30 ish, then drops to 10 and doesnt recover. I dont know why this is, but it becomes unplayable when it drop to below 15 FPS. I checked my cpu temp via AIDA32 and its at 35 C while playing bf2 and 28 while idle. This is with a 9 inch fan aimed on the CPU.

Im not why my FPS is somtimes so bad, it doesnt matter how bug the server is. Im guessing it is to do with my video card. I know it isnt the best but doesnt warrant FPS of 10

and heh, im having serious probs with my video card and monitor. If it inst non responsive then it makes my PC reset itself.

All my settings are on medium and reselusion is on 800 x 600 70hz
aa is off

EDIT - I did some testing and even with all setting on low, after the first round it all went downhill. 1st round fps was at 40-60. Then about 1 min into the 2nd round the fps went down to 15-20 (on low). This is the 1st game of the day, so any game after is low fps, unless i turn my pc off dor 15 mins.

Any help will be great!

nvm about last post. *note to self, make sure the heatsink isnt clogged with dust*

anywho, just another question. If I get a new mobo, will my HDD have to be reformated or is it simpy a question of swapping all the components around?
