I was reading this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6357899.stm

And he doesn't seem so bad, he seems like someone that doesn't fuck around. Whilst the other lady seemed really really PC. I dunno, you can't make much from that BBC Article but that's what I think.

So what is actually bad about this guy?

I just thought he was bad because he seemed ...dodgy. But they all do don't they.

I wasn't serious, but you'll hear about him sooner or later.

It is rumoured that he might be steering a little to the right.

He caused the riots in Paris, he proposed the profiling of criminals in kindergarten, he proposed a ministry of national identity, and other things that I don't remember.

SARKOZY'S VICTORY MESSAGE TO AMERICA: 'YOU CAN COUNT ON FRANCE AS A FRIEND'.

Yes I'd say that's a nightmare for some.

According to the article in the OP he says he will "lower unemployment", but in the article enumerating policies, his economic policies seem simply to lower taxes a little. Adding to that, he is promoting overtime and to fund his policies he will cut civil service jobs. Somehow that is not going to magically create jobs for those in france. From the looks of it hes making some pretty empty promises.

he wants to restrict the unions rights to strike, increase the standard working week and other general Thatcher-esque beliefs/intent.

I think the kaiser chiefs got it right when then said "I predict a riot"

Yet he won by a clear decisive margin still.

Woohoo! I like Sarkozy.  Even if he wasn't pro-American, I'd like him.  He's one of the few politicians in Europe with the balls to directly address the Islamic extremist problems over there.  Yes, he's somewhat of an opportunist, but he did originally fight to protect the rights of immigrants and tried to find work for them.

After the riots, however, the kid gloves were off.  When he described the violent youth of the North African immigrants as scum, he was right.  He wasn't saying all North Africans are scum, just the violent ones.  To me, that's not racism -- that's common sense.

France will hopefully set a precedent in Europe that, if you come to the West, you'd best respect our laws, or your ass is out.  To fight extremism, you have to be firm in your enforcement of the law, just like with illegal immigrants.

Yes but no.

It is true that the second generation of immigrants (that ARE French, as they were born there) is composed of criminals (often very young). But the reality is that even though they were born in France and are French, they aren't considered as normal French citizens. They live in ghettos with shitty schools, even if they work hard and manage to get degrees, they'll have to face racism to find a job or a house. This hopeless reality leads some to the path of criminality.

During the riots, journalists managed to interview some of the rioters, and they said that they wanted a better  future for their younger brothers and sons, and that only REAL equality would achieve it.

Sarkozy won't improve the living and educational conditions of the ghettos, he'll only repress.

He had a way better campaign than Segelène (however you write her name) who just kept promising all these things that would never work anyway. She was unrealistic about things, and this guy actually appealed to the people. I see nothing wrong with the election.
I agree with many of his views, and think it's good that a realist finally came along - I really hate wishy-washy people.

I don't know much about his politics yet, but I don't think I'll like him in the long run. He's too close to the Norwegian Progress Party to be of comfort to me.

But he seems to be a man of action... he promised he'd change France within the span of a hundred days. Can't wait to see what hits the fan; shit or flowers.

As anti-war as France has been (based on UN voting records & etc.) it's amazing that the vote turned out the way that it did.

On a lighter note, I'll miss seeing Royal in the press. As far as heads of state go, she wasn't too hard on the eyes.
