I saw it necessary to post this little "set of pointers" for all you polling-enthusiasts out there.
Why poll?
Polling is a good way to see what the communitys opinion is on various subjects. Whether it be pulling out of Iraq or beating the meat, everyone has an opinion and a standpoint. Polls give the poster an anonymity that enables them to say what they think without being afraid of flaming. One can comment on their particular choice, but it's not obligatory.
What do I need to consider when constructing a poll?
1. First of all, you need to post information which is needed for the respondent in order to decide their standpoint. Supply objective data over the subject at hand. Do your best not to have your own opinions interfere with the first post.
2. Construct your questions in a way that there is little to no room left for interpretation. It's easier to answer a poll, and get more valid answers if the question is well constructed and the options are clear to everyone.
3. Try not to make a poll just for shits and giggles, have an agenda. The optimal situation is that you actually want to find out something in your poll, and might even use the received data for something constructive (such as a thesis? - Even the masturbation-poll might apply here )
When do I create my poll?
Create your poll whenever you wish, but remember that the attention value of your poll is greatly reduced if there's a "series of polls" going on at the same time, such as "User Battles" or "Ultimate Superhero Championship" etc.
It would not only be greatly appreciated, but recommended that several "Playoff"-polls would NOT be active at the same time. If there's e.g. a "Beauty Pageant" running currently, you can wait with your "Super Duper Care Bear Showdown"-poll until the previous one is over. This way the front page doesn't get crowded by polls, your polls get more attention and everyone is happy.
And remember to use the Search-feature to see if this poll has been done before!
