Northern Strike is really worth it though.

I don't know about 2142, but in BF2 I wanted to get the SF unlocks without paying for the game as well. If you decide you don't want to spend the money, you can go to a lan cafe and play one round and you will get the unlocks. At least, this is how it worked for me with BF2. You might want to check that it will work.
