Forget the one hundred dollar laptop. India has bigger, but cheaper, plans. Ten times cheaper to be exact: India's Ministry of Human Resource Development is spearheading the project, with help from Semiconductor Complex, a state-sponsored designer and manufacturer of integrated circuits. Officials from those organizations are presently weighing system designs submitted by an engineering student from India's Vellore Institute of Technology and a researcher from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. The Times of India on Friday reported that the efforts thus far have yielded designs for a laptop that would cost about $47, while a $10 system remains the ultimate goal.

Last year, Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child Organization submitted a proposal to the Indian government under which the group would have worked to produce laptops for Indian students starting at $100. Indian officials at the time criticized the proposal as insufficiently mature to be taken seriously and rejected it.

I think that's more or less the whole idea of developing such a laptop this cheap.  I think it's a great idea to help children in third world countries get connected and to boost their education, but I don't think the tech is there to make this dream feasible quite yet.

The laptops will have a 500-MHz processor, 128-Mbytes DRAM, 500-Mbytes flash memory, and four USB ports. The laptops aren't expected to have hard drives.

An attached hand crank for power generation. The group has said it's also considering other options for power generation, including a foot pedal.

Does anyone know how much this would've cost say, 10 years ago? This could give an indication to how cheap our "uber computers" might be in the future. And how we might laugh like we are now at the specs, technology is funny. This will probably help out alot more than we think.

All this computer stuff is accelerating faster than it ever has. Shit's crazy!

considering most people on BF2s play BF2 on a PlayStation (not even a PS2) I would say yes. If it is $47 now, and a PlayStation cost like $30 right now then yeah they could play BF2.

Well, it sucks, but £5 for a laptop? That would be brilliant for reading PDF books on, and for writing stuff.
Hell, with all the dead MP3 players and USB drives I have lying around, I could store tons of stuff. Even watch anime and AMVs on the go, if it has a soundcard and headphone port.
