Not for the Mac as in OS X 10.4.9.
But you can install under Windows XP (Using Bootcamp to install XP on your mac) as I did.

12in? do you mean 13? im looking at this page of specs
based on that same page, would the cheapest 15in macbook pro work for games?
Sorry, you are right 13". Made a typo.
You would need a MacBook Pro 15", and I would advice you to go for the 2nd 15" model, with a 2,33Ghz processor and 256Mb videocard. It has a lesser value deduction over time, because of it's better specs.

My iMac (June '06) would be worth about 1900-2000 euros still (full 20" model with 3 year waranty).
thanks. i may still go with a regular macbook simply because my dell laptop is capable of running these games already and the main reason for the mac would be portability (smaller size, like a 13in) and use with adobe products and the such (i go to an art school that uses mostly macs). the gaming capability would simply be a plus.

well, i prefer pc's but i use both on a daily basis and have been thinking about getting a macbook. id like the black one, but would that be enough for games, or would i need to get a mac book pro?
No the MacBook 13" Black edition is not only more expensive then the normal white one, but it also has an Intel onboard graphics card, thus not being able to run games smooth, if not at all.

Can either one of you, Marlboroman or Bernadictus, please recommend a Plist cleanup software, if there is such a thing. I think that is also important in getting the Mac to run smoothly. I got so much crap on my Library folder that I believe it is slowing down my machine.

edit: this is my pre-AppZapper days.. on my two year old G4 PBook.
I do not know of any program that does so, and my classmate next to me, also has no idea.
Best recommandation I could give you is a clean reinstall, and AppZapp.
try cocktail, i think that might be able to help, worth a shot.

Thanks, guys! Will give it a shot. The other option is to delete the plist files, all of them and let the system re-create them. But I don't want to risk it, not with 2 years worth of stuff inside it despite a regular backup habit.

Just need to go to the toolbar/pulldown menu, click Accounts, and edit the mail account that you want to have this setting. You should see the image below, and un-check the box that says "leave a copy of the mail on each server". I used pre v.X as well, and its the same option if I recall correctly.

And to add to the comments here, sadly Microsoft Office for Mac is the only software that continues to give me problems but I need to interface with my office's Windows Office and client as well. Will just have to live with it. But it does have features that are not found in in Office XP.

1. does open office run on Macs ?
2. I build all my PC's myself. As a result, if a piece of hardware fails ( PSU, RAM, HD, Fans, etc..), I can go to the electronics store of my preference, purchase a new piece and put it in. All of this without having to bring my machine to an apple store or - even worse - send it in for costly repairs. Could I do the same thing with a Mac ?
I am asking because I have never seen Mac hardware on the shelfs of any electronics store here in germany, not even the big retailers.
3. What do I do if I want to upgrade my Mac ( RAM, HD space ) ? Do I need to send it in, or can I purchase the necessary hardware and put it in myself ( probably voiding my warranty in the process ) ?
4. Why has Apple stopped making MacBooks with that flashy blue illuminated logo on the back of the screen ? My GF wants one, but only with the blue logo ( she has watched too much Sex and the City, I guess ).

One thing that bothers me is the price. Apple products are usually more expensive than regular PC's or Laptops. 2.500 € for a basic Mac Pro ? For that kind of money, I could build a kick-ass PC and still have a couple of euros left for a beer or two.

I'd buy a Mac if I worked in design, video editing, etc. For everything else, regular PC's are sufficient, and much more cost-effective. The raw computing power that some Macs over is normally not being used in an average computer user's household anyway.

And btw, as I have said, I build all of my PC's myself, and I have never had one of them lock up on me. No hardware failure, either. Some issues with bad software coding, ctd's in BF2, but those were not hardware-related. Btw, did BF2 also crash to desktop on a Mac ?

The Mac is better suited for specific applications, but for everyday, average computers user demands ( dl porn, e-mails, web surfing, office apps ) it is too expensive. For those, a standard PC or laptop will do just fine, for less money. my 2c.

Yes it does, from OS X 10.3 up, but it uses the X11 widowing enviroment.

Hmm, I have never had a Mac hardware failure in 3 years. But you are right, you can't get Mac hardware unless the supplier is Mac certified.

No, you can insert the stuff if you want it. The iMac, Pro and both Books' can be openend. Offcourse if you have applecare (3 year waranty you might void it, but I am not certain if this is the case for the Mac Pro too, since it has hotswap drives.).

B.Schuss wrote:

I have no idea why they stopped making those. http://www.icolours.ca/ has some pretty cool inserts.
You could always try searching for refubrished of second hand iBooks.

But would it looks as horny as the Mac Pro? It is all about taste, design and the willingness to spend money on it.

The Apple MacBook (13") and the Apple Mini are both excellent machines for that too, have lower specs and are alot cheaper. And again, you are not only paying for the machine, you get OS X and the design

I experience zero to non crashes due to hardware on my Imac when playing BF2 in Bootcamp'd XP.
I do recieve the occasional program crashes without a warning.

thanks, Berni and Marlboro

I'll consider buying a Mac when I have the money. The problem with that is, I need my PC for gaming purposes, too, which in turn means I'd have to get the basic MacPro at least ( performance-wise ). That's 2.500,00 €

Unfortunately, there is just no way I can gather that much money and spend it on one item alone. I am not a millionaire, so I have to be a little more cost-effective with my spending.

If I win big in the lottery though, be assured I'll buy any product Apple, Inc. has to offer.

@Bernadictus, bless Applecare Protection Plan. I had to replaced my G4 Pbook's motherboard and the LCD screen (one vertical deadpixel line). All in all, would have cost me more than what i paid for the "insurance" scheme.

Hey guys.
I thought it would be better asking here in the Mac bit of the forum

A little while ago picked up a Mac Book pro and need a little help with BF 2 set ups.

I have installed my copy of BF2 the other day and would like to know about patches.......

With my copy of BF 2 I will need to patch it up to the current issue.

Can I patch it with the latest version or will I need to update it patch by patch till I get to the latest version?

I also bought the booster packs for BF2 both Special forces and the AF and Euro Fighters one. I have installed both of thses boosters but neither want to work on my mac book pro. Is there problems with these boosters working on a Mac Book Pro?

Thanks for all your help guys and gals

Serious question - Why/how can a Mac screw up PC's on a network?  We have a network with 4 PC's and a Macbook, and whenever the macbook connects, the PC's start getting corrupt data, e.g. garbled pictures.

Is it possible to overclock a Mac? Just curious really, as they don't seem to have a BIOS as such. I suppose in theory you could use one of those programs that overclock it for you through Bootcamp. Anyone done it?

some people apparently OC the x1600's that are inside most of the better macs. Dunno about the CPU though.

also whats you peoples opinion on osx86 project. Worth checking out?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

you can, I have used a couple of different programs in os x that let me change the processor speed. none seem to work that great, the processor all ready kinda run hot as it is so you can imagine what happens when you put the screws to them. anyways never heard of anyone oc the video card.

i have been a member of the os x86 project from the beginning. i think what they are doing is awesome. if you get a chance and you have a spare computer that meets the requirements try it out. I have osx running on my dell right now.
