Can anyone explain what exactly causes the the smoke etc when breaking the sound barrier? or is it just becuase they use thrusters/afterburners to break the barrier?

Possibly a bird or some debris went into one of the jet engines.
Breaking the sound barrier puts great stress on an object, something the size of your fist might have broken off and gone through the engine.
