Is it really true they tried to keep the FOV the same regardless of resolution??

I think so yes. The argument is that people who can afford widescreen shouldn't get the FOV advantage you'd think would come with it. My argument is that widescreen is quickly getting cheaper, and if EA wants the Games for Windows certification on their games then the games must truly support widescreen rather than the half-assed job DICE did.

I personally see very LITTLE difference, ok, yes, it's significant, but as far as sniping wise, I think it's better... Regardless, it's the simplest 1/1000th Degree step left or right to see the enemy... In which to some may be more significant to others... Me, I'm alright with it... I wonder what the difference is in 2142, if it's the same or not...

What type of monitor do you have?  What is it's native resolution?

I have 17in LCD with a native resolution of 1280x1024.  I do notice a change in the field of view when I run something other than the native resolution.

makes no difference really, although I do notice the increased framerate at 75 Hz instead of 60.

I run BF2 on a 21" Viewsonic LCD @ 1680 x 1050 and it is perfect, if I use a setting in-games then things do go oblong but with the native setting of 1680x1050 in the start-up string, all is perfect, not sure about field of view or depth of view at other resolutions but BF2 runs perfect IMO at my LCD's native resolution.

1280x1024  -> 5:4 format or aspect ratio (it shows a full view)
1024x768, 800x600, 1280x960, 1600x1200 -> 4:3 aspect ratio, so all those resolutions should show exactly same thing..to get this aspect ratio you need to cut original 5:4 a bit on top and bottom.. and that's what screenies show..
1680 x 1050, 1920x1200 (widescreen) -> cut much more on bottom and top.. I just don't know why it's cut a bit on sides too

It seems 5:4 is the  aspect ratio of BF2 game, probably programmers were creating BF2 at that resolution and it's the only aspect ratio fully supported by the game.

Well, I've got a fairly low end setup, and I know that I have had numerous occasions as the helo gunner on Wake where my pilot has had a much better view range than me.  I had to tell them to call TV targets for me, I would fire it and then find my target as I got closer.  That worked better than I would have thought.
Im on a low end machine and I get that ALL the time. Its so infuriating when my pilot says "why the fuck didnt you fire". Simple: I didnt see anything - yet he obviously did. I get that in both situations - where im the gunner or the pilot.

This only really affects me in helicopters - jets paint the targets anyway and ground pounding, well, you see where the shell is coming from.
You can fix that by going into your video options and setting Geometry to high and your view distance to 100%.

Seems to me that 5:4 is the only supported aspect ratio.  When you change the aspect ratio the field of view becomes distorted in one form or fashion.  It would make sense that they made this game based on aspect ratio more so then anything else. That would explain the field of view problems using anything other then 5:4 aspect ratio IMO.

looks to me like the detail of the street in the 1920 by 1200 is way better than the 800 by 600 etc. but i think its supposed to be that way. also my friend says that the higher res the more farther you can see and it also looks like that

They made this for ME because I'm playing on this resolution!

No seriously, I think we need a poll how many people play with which resolution and I think we might get an answer there...

I wonder why the FOV is no better at 1280x960?  That is the original resolution for BF2.  I would thought it would have the greatest FOV.

The original resolution is 5:4 not 4:3.

I am not sure what you are looking at but the best way to see the difference is to take notice of the red car to the far left then scan through the photos in tab mode using FF or IE.

1920x1200

Here is a pic of me sniping with the MG36 Karkand between Square aiming towards Suburbs.

Although not accurate, the combatants are very clear to see at 1920x1200

Objects are bigger then normal  Making for nice targets.

Kinda hard to miss now that players are bigger then normal at this resolution.
