BEIJING (Reuters) - China has detained four people after a horrific accident in which more than 25 metric tons of molten steel engulfed a room where workers were changing shift, killing at least 32, state media said on Thursday.

An industrial ladle was moving into the pouring position at the plant in the northeastern province of Liaoning when it sheared off an iron rail, spewing out its 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,730 F) contents.

"The liquid metal engulfed the room, bursting through the door and windows and burying the workers," the China Daily said of Wednesday's tragedy at a plant belonging to the Qinghe Special Steel Co. Ltd.

"It is the most serious accident to hit China's steel industry since 1949," Sun Huashan, deputy head of the State Administration of Work Safety, was quoted as saying, citing the year of the founding of Communist China.

Look on the bright side: China can blame anyone they want and sell their organs post-execution.

I bet China purchased that steel legally from the steel dealer.  I think China should implement stricter steel laws or ban steel altogether.

My question is, how did they move 25 metric tons of steel once it had engulfed several rooms and cooled?

Maybe they needed a new floor...

Never! Every person has the right to defend their home with a 25 tonne crucible of molten steel. You can pour it on criminals when they come up the stairs, kind of like in Home Alone, but with more horrifying pain, screaming and death.

If it were Americans who died this thread would be engulfed with the usual "how can you be so heartless, these people had families ....etc. etc." comments in response to the jokes and light hearted remarks being made here. Thank God the Chinese aren't real people eh?

I'm sitting opposite my Chinese mates in class while typing this, hope they can't see my screen!

P.S. Maybe the workers at that factory were trying to kill a xenomorph alien in an elaborate trap?

hahaha - not. Steel has a purpose. Guns don't. Don't bring things from other threads into this. This has nothing to do with that.

On another note, actually addressing the topic, I think they should probably renew their facility. It's terrible that a thing such as this has happened, and there's nothing worse in a tragedy than having no one to blame but yourself (in this case the company).
