Yes, James Earl Jones is probably best known to the latest generation as the voice of Darth Vader, a roll he didn't even actually play, so yes, he would be as well known IMO.  But I understand your point about Don.  He is great at what he does, but remember too, he is the most well known voice narrator for movie trailers primarily because he is the one in front of the camera too (Geico commercial, a lot of small parts in commercials around Dallas, and on movie review shows)  Plus, as most people forget, Don is not the only voice narrator/actor out there, just the BEST!!
