The walker is a pwn machine. As a fairly decent walker pilot, I'd much rather go at it alone; jumping from seat to seat depending on what the target is. I've been able to go against other walkers at full strength and "walk" away without damage. Just a matter of strategically using your shields and environment. Getting the first missiles out always helps.
Also, I go engineer, andI always take the motion mine with me. I keep it as my default weapon when I get into a walker so it's ready when I need to hop out quickly and get rid of mines. The other useful tool of course is the repair tool. I've been known to get out of the walker and repair in the middle of a firefight with another walker or tank. Any little bit helps, but you've got to find cover...
