Ok, so we all want everyone to have access to argubly the best healthcare in the World - how can this be done?

I was thinking about this over the weekend and came up with a couple of ideas that I wanted to discuss with you all.

1.  Any money spent for healthcare insurance be tax deductable.

Advantage of this solution is that people who actually pay taxes can now buy health insurance for themselves and their family.  Theoretically insurance premiums will go down as more people pay into the system.  If we spend more time doing preventitive medicine than we will save alot of money, I think.

Disadvantage of this solution is that people who don't already pay taxes don't get any benifit and thus couldn't afford insurance.  Medicare, an U.S. government program, already covers anyone who has less than $2,000 in savings (not including your home or car), so the poorest are already covered.

2.  Require everyone have health insurance, including illegals.

Eventhough Arnold is probably the most liberal Republican, at least he doesn't raise taxes.   Take a read of his press release and I think you'll agree that its a comprehensive plan that wouldn't take us down the socialized medicine and poor healthcare system of countries like Canada.

What do you think?

I think the US has gone way too far down the rampant capitalism route at this stage to be able to implement a public healthcare scheme. It's too little, too late.

PS Canada has the best healthcare system in the entire world. Second is Cuba. Wtf are you talking about?

Take a closer look at the California health plan.  I have a client who is involved in Texas' upcoming legislation for illegals or uninsured getting free health coverage...she said that the Governator is hoping to fund illegals getting health care by having the doctors and hospitals pay for it, instead of it coming from taxes.

So in other words, the Governator isn't raising taxes...he's just raising the cost of healthcare for everyone in California....

Australia has medicare where all income earners pay a "medicare levy" or 1.5% of taxable income. This 1.5% is guaranteed to go to health care and is a wonderful system which sees no one prevented from accessing health care.

Mandatory health pre-care tax makes sense, after all a state doesn't seek as much profit as private health care companies.

If I'm diagnosed with lung cancer I'm going to the Mayo clinic or the Moffit cancer center, not the peoples republic health care clinic. There is a reason the the US leads the world in medical research and treatment. The competitiveness brings some of the worlds best doctors to our doors. Of course it needs to be more inclusive.

The money*

But your main point is correct: Competition works - but so do systems where there's absolutely no competition and the doctor doesn't have to fear about a possibly better one taking his place.
Oh, by the way, my health insurance also covers private hospitals ^^

Don`t think most people in the US can buy their way past the public healtcare system, not 100% sure how that works in the US !

Kmarion - here in the 'socialist' Republic we can choose to purchase private healthcare, the net of public healthcare is there for those who don't purchase the insurance that provides you with premium care. For instance, I have health insurance so that if I'm taken ill I'll be in a private hospital.

Despite popular belief there are ways to get free or low cost health care here as well. It is just more challenging than it should be and it is is not the kind of plan you get from private providers.
