Not much else I can say about this except...duh.  So far though, the Bushies have let their pet fundies have $1.5 BILLION of our tax dollars for these "abstinence only" programs.  This is such a waste on so many levels and a way the fundies have successfully managed to throw their "morality" into our public schools for the last 6 years or so.

$1.5 billion spent to tell teenagers "sex is bad unless you're married", and then stick your head in the dirt.

Anyways, since Congress passed a bill recently saying the administration could no longer censor science, the report on the failure of "abstinence only" sex ed has been posted quietly up on a government web site.

The question though is, will they knock it off and teach real sex ed now or will the fundies pushing these programs just stick their fingers in their ears and start yelling "la la la la la"?

My money's on the fingers-in-the-ears thing.

This is the same mentality that tried to block vaccinations for cervical cancer-causing HPV because they felt that sex "should still have consequences". Like a protracted and painful death apparently. They're still going to fight realistic sex education for that reason and because they think teaching sex ed encourages promiscuity. And they don't really care how many lives are ruined or ended.

Wow. That money could have been spent on something useful.

Like, perhaps, equipping soldiers properly BEFORE sending them into a warzone, instead of afterwards.

or not spending it on war.  I'd rather piss away 1.5 billion trying to do something semi-useful.

That program is crap. I am taking it right now, it is useless. Once you get into high school nobody gives a shit. It's either you want to have sex or you don't. You can't change peoples minds by telling them you can get STD's and crap. People will do it anyways because they don't care. Why don't they save the money on something useful, like for the soldiers.

You guys have abstinence programs? Wow, sucks to be you. Here we just get it plain and simple, they just lay out the facts for us and let us make our own decisions. Thats the proper way to do it

Funny, I went to Catholic elementary school, and received a "no-holds-barred" sex ed course in fifth grade.  No sugar coating......it was very much "Ok kids, you have questions about sex, here's the answers."

I turned out ok.......oh wait..........no I didn't....

I learn it in my school. It's total bullshit. They're like sex can create emotional damage to a person blah blah blah you might get an STD and get pregnant!

Me: What about condoms, it's 99% safe.
Tacher: There's still that 1%, I wouldn't risk it, sex after marriage.
Me thinking: You have a GF and you're not even married... sure you didn't bang her.

Reading this, I thought how come a country with such an impressive history of investing in and reaping the benefits of scientific research allows this guy to do whatever he wants?

US students attending sexual abstinence classes are no more likely to abstain from sex than those who do not, according to a new study.  In the past few years of Republican Party control of Congress, the spending on no-sex-before-marriage education has risen from $10m to $176m a year.  Social conservatives have long believed that teaching adolescents about sexuality and contraception could encourage them to have sex.  They would rather promote abstinence until marriage.

Is this a joke?  Kids are attending sexual abstinence classes?  What else do they teach kids?  Don't fuck before marriage or you'll go to hell?  Does not this belong to the Dark Ages?  How is this less archaic than the Sharia Law?  Is this what you want for your country?  I really mean it.  America has a long history in scientific research and invention, and this guy is talking about abstinence and Creationism?  Sorry, if some of you feel offended, but this is outrageous.  I'm not attacking America, I'm attacking his ignorant president.  I think America deserves much better than him.  Such a little man can't be the president of such a great country.

Obviously if it's failing then we have to try something else, but I'm sure even with a Democratic congress any changes would face a tough battle.

Is this a joke?  Kids are attending sexual abstinence classes? .
We had Liberals teaching in Grade school about Homosexuality and how to employ condoms for years.
It didn't work out. We needed balance. Teaching kids "they don't have to be pressured into sex"

pretty strange huh ?

Hell is a theme found in some religions. How did you make this jump? Your over reaching at best. At worst I dare not say.

Well for one sex is an option and so is marriage for men and women and ( the shock ) boys and girls in school too.

Woman are not possessions, slaves or cattle. Somehow you missed this in your zeal to trash America.
Why don't you worry about your own country or the Malvinas.

You are completely out of your depth here.

Teaching kids abstinence is not balance.  Where did I trash America?  If you have comprehension issues solve them.  I worry about my country, and I don't give a shit for Malvinas.  Thanks for your concern.

Kinda, but this is even worse.  I don't think it's a good idea to teach kids that sex before marriage is a bad thing.  Either way, sexual education should be left to the parents.  Maybe the schools should teach about the STD's, but nothing else.

sexual abstinence has its base in religious teachings thus how he made the jump to "hell".

Hunter he is not trashing america he is astounded that such a forward country can have such old fashioned and archaic position of sex when it has the highest teen birth rate and some of the highest STD rates in the western world. and that funding for such methods of "teaching" (and i use that word with great reluctance) has increased almost 200%. and the problems are getting worse.

abstinence simply doesnt work, it is avoiding the issue, cause and effect of the actual problem. the reason things are so bad in america and england (as we are second on the list) is due to lack of knowledge in youth culture. without a actual education on how things work and how to prevent bad things happening the youth of today have no chance. there is a connection with appalling education on sex and STD and birth rates, look at india and most of africa as examples.

Abstinence programs certainly have a moral base, but they're also trying to communicate practical reality.  The program is not teaching that sex is bad, rather it is informing kids of the realities that can result from sexual activity.  Where's the harm in telling kids it's possible to wait past age 14 to have sex?  I am not naive about the realities of high school . . . almost all my friends were having sex, but there were also others who chose not to.  Should they be labeled archaic and part of the Dark Ages by making that choice?  It's they're choice, so why isn't it just as valid as those who choose sex?  Seems there's only one uninformed choice advocated for teens.

its not to do with the time thats the problem. its the Lack of other information given. other programs teaches that you can wait as long as you like, about saying no etc, look at the dutch system! , but it also gives relevant information if you have more than one sexual partner and gives practical advice on condoms and other common birth control methods it covers both possibility's, hell even if you wait till your married, what about your partner? what if they've had sex before?
sticking a kids head in the ground and telling them to wait does nothing, but frustrates the kid and leaves him ill-equipped for life in general and other people. all it does is "pass along" the problem until he's a adult.

im not saying if you wait your weird. but it is the lack of information that is given by the abstinence program that is damaging. even people with that information can choose to wait, as the teaching of most western country's also include how to say no and not be ashamed, it just doesn't link it to marriage

But the money invested into it before 2000 was much smaller than it is now. The amount in this useless program when up 17 times from The Clinton to Bush administration.
