It isn't white people placing the blame on everyone else. It's the reality of the society we live in today. For lack of a better term, "it's cool to be black", and the things that black people did/do that seperated them socially from whites have all, or mostly all, become mainstream and socially acceptable. Essentially, it's no longer a "black thing" to listen to rap music (for example). You can't say the comments (which are exteremly similar to rap music lyrics) are anyones fault, except Imus'. True, it was the wrong thing to say, but I think what he was trying to do was sort of adapt socially to our changing culture. Unfortunatly for older people, they dont often know how or what to say/do to try to appear socially "hip". If it was truly an innocent attempt at a joke, which he apologized and explained as, then the best thing to do is to understand him and basically have a "forgive and forget" mindset. He tried to appeal to modern audiences, and did a terrible job. If this is what he really intended, then he is truly sorry, and you can bet he wont try like that again.  No one benefits by dragging this out of proportion, much like this insanely unnecessary coverage of this Anna Nicole Smith garbage.

Imus was an idiot for saying what he did... But the words he ignorantly used are common words spoken by rap stars and kids alike...

No, media-tastic 'rap' culture glorifies violence.  Why is it that record companies are pushing these types of records?  I don't know if they are consciously trying to promote violence and crime, but a lot of people who listen to "mainstream rap" (representing the majority of the genre that glorifies violence/crime/drugs) are suburban, white, middle-class 10-16 year-olds.  Maybe it is because people in the suburbs (largely removed from the violence and crime spoken about in rap lyrics) love the glorification.  "Wow, 50 Cent sure is badass, he got shot 9 times!  How COOL is that."  Record companies promoting and bankrolling the glorification of this type of music should not be dismissed.

The beginnings of 'rap' music were based on critiques of society.  Many pioneers of rap are known for their social observations, both of their (the artist's) own community and their perceptions of American society as a whole.  There are still many rap artists (probably a majority, though that's a guess) who embrace and promote equality, kindness, treating others with respect, etc.

I heard the other night, on Hannity and Colmes, (when they interviewed Patrice O'Neal - Comedian, apparently) Patrice O'Neal said, after becoming very upset, "Yes - What [black people] want is a double standard when it comes to racism. I can sit here and say nigger. You [points to Sean] can't. You [points to Alan] can't either. There is a double standard and that's what we want."

First we must understand, that the basic problem of racism is that certain people groups are made "less-equal" or "inferior". As a result of this, for example, the black community called for social equality, and the riddance of the "seperate but equal" policies of the '60's. So, according to Patrice O'Neal, who "represented" the black community on this program, blacks want both social equality as well as a double standard on racism? That's pure hypocrisy. So is O'Neal's, a relatively low-level figure in the black community (but still in a position of representation of the black community), view and explaination of "what blacks want" accurate? When it all boils down, he is actually right. Blacks want a double standard. They want to be able to do and say whatever they want without consequence, but aren't ready to accept any punishment for their degrading, demeaning words and actions against "their own people". This can lead to problems, and some stereotyping. The thing about black stereotypes, is that MOST (not ALL, and not ALL THE TIME) of them are true. But because they're stereotypes, and since we have such a fear of stereotyping people, the true stereotypical aspects of the black community are often overlooked. I'm NOT saying that ALL black people are like the stereotypes they're often labeled as, but MOST are. Due to the expectation of modern society for a young black male to listen to rap music, dress in baggy clothes, and talk the type of language, a lot of these young black males DO "fall into" these stereotypes. The whole issue of stereotyping goes back to what types of things we can call another race, even if the words are part of the modern culture. Our problem in society, or at least American society, is that everyone is offended by something. Everyone takes the words of other people, and because of those words, they just "cant go on anymore, because it's so devastating". Yes, I know, no one likes being made fun of. That's obvious. But in most cases no one is being intentionally hurt that deeply. But when someone makes a small comment, having NO INTENTION of it being racially degrading, this whole panic mode of "oh no, this is going to offend someone, so let's go and make it a national crisis", sets in. Imus had no intention of creating this (for lack of a better term) shitstorm of media attention. But one person finds it a little bit offensive and it just snowballs from there. We need to stop this inability of us as a people and a nation (regardless of religion) to forgive each other. If everyone worked equally to resolve this issue (blacks AND whites, together) of racism, it would be a start to the betterment of our society, and maybe society as a whole could learn a lesson from this.

He was basically stating that no matter how much external force we have, if our insides are crumbling, it will cause the collapse of America as a whole.

Well, this has nothing to do with race, but since this guy who shot up the school in VA was Asian, it may be blown way out of proportion (when it comes to race). Just a thought...
