Well my WIFE (does that count as a girlfriend) doesn't understand my passion for gaming at all. Since we also have a young child, my gaming hours are highly restricted. In order to spend time with my wife and child i've given up large chunks of my gaming hours. I miss my game time some, but the trade off was well worth it.
I mostly only game now when the wife and child are away or after both of them have gone to bed. The downfall to that is i never get to use my mic in VoiP servers :*(. The last thing i want to do is wake my daughter in the middle of the night trying to tell my commander that my squad needed that supplydrop/arty strike last week when i asked for it.

She understands my time on the computer but she doesn't understand why I go to bed at a decent time to get up and listen to Howard Stern early in the morning...I think she is jealous of him.

Some games I run up to a tank, steal/take it, and from there on she takes it she is getting the hang of tank-busting. And she is the nightmare of every pedestrian in BF2. ^^
As long as my wife has a book, I'm good. If I want a weekend of BF2, I gotta stop off and buy a few books, it's a small price to pay.
