Because until recently UN inspectors have been given proper access to the refinement sites. The volume of Irans current operation is well known and from that it is easy for the inspectors to calculate how long it will take Iran to refine enough Uranium for a bomb. The estimates are between 5 and 10 years. Even if they massively increased the size of their operation, which they are doing they and is well documented it will still be years (at the very least 1 or 2, maybe more) before Iran can produce a functional bomb.
If I conceed that then I can counter act with the suggestion who says we are having a war in a short time scale (ala two years) with Iran?  It would most likely be under a new president any war would be conducted (surely bush cant be going for a hatrick) which fits in with the 2+ years it would apparantly take for them to have a bomb ready if we take what u say to be fact.

1. Yea, I think we have a pretty good chance.
2. Somewhat.
3. A better fight then Iraq put up in the first Gulf war.

But what if Iran declared war against the US (instead of the other way around), would China and Russia still back them up?
