I don't understand how the beam is visible, I'm pretty sure that can't be true.

I sell promotional products, and have a client who got some with their logo on them . . . I know that they are much brighter and the beam travels farther, but I don't think the ones I sold can cut things or start fires!  But maybe . . . might have to borrow one from the warehouse tonight and see hehe.
They can cut paper, and burn it, but starting fires? Not too sure. You'll still need something with high combustion spontaneity, and a lot of it.

Lol. The beam is visible because of dust particles in the air. Same with red lasers, by the way. The difference in color comes from the different gases that are used to project the beam. The green beam is probably more visible simply because it is brighter, and therefore reflects off dust particles in a more visible manner. In a vaccum neither red or green lasers have visible beams. (Didn't red lasers use argon gas by the way?)

EDIT: it appears there are also solid-state lasers, which don't use gas. (Ruby for example, as someone said above). It's likely that these laser pens are solid state lasers instead of gas-lasers.

The ones in that video capable of party tricks cost several hundred dollars.

I have a 25mw myself, it shines nicely, but wont burn anything other then perhaps a retina......

Yes, lasers don't use filters to give them colors, that's why you never see white lasers.

I just bought one that totaled $60.  The laser itself was only $35, and no, I didn't get express shipping.

A friend of mine got a green laser pointer/pen, and I've seen it in action.  We took it up into the hills at night and shone it out across a valley, and you could see the beam all the way to the cliffs the opposite side to us,(maybe a mile and a half away) it was pretty damn cool.

The coolest bit is when you hold it to the side of your head, so that wherever you look you get a beam pointing in that direction like some kind of futuristic aiming device for your laser vision.  We didn't try burst any balloons or anything with it though, so I don't know what kind of power it had.

I had a red laser that ran on AAAs, but I don't recall what sort of wattage it used.  The only way to see the beam was to hold it next to your eye on a foggy night.  Even if it was REALLY foggy, you couldn't see the beam if you looked at it at around 90 degrees.

lol, I have one. It's pretty cool!

Cant cut through stuff and beam isn't visible but cool nonetheless.

Yeah, I know this is my 3rd post on the trot.

But it turns out you can see the beam! only in the dark though

I still don't understand how that's possible without fog or some sort of mist.

I did physics in A level, and I know a bit about how light works, can someone explain how the beam is visable?

Do you want me to make a video?

I do Physics too. The light must be "shining" onto very small particles, such as water vapour or dust; i guess. You can see the beam inside as well as outside.
