Indeed. And actually, Coventry is a good example of where countries have done things in the past that may be morally questionable with hindsight. In this case it was what Churchill did to the citizens of Coventry by not warning the city that it was to be bombed for fear that it would alert the Germans to the fact that we'd cracked one of their codes.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

It you knew anything about what you were talking about you would know that the US government DID need those nukes to end the war. It would have costed MANY more lives than it did.[pt] KEIOS wrote:

well, i guess it all depends on how you look at it. true, the Japanese were about to surrender, but it certainly is possible that a lot of the war criminals could have escaped without an unconditional surrender.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

either way, its a stupid point to bring up, and even more stupid to argue about it. the same argument could be made that if the US hadn't stepped in, Germany would have never surrendered. nobody can really say either way, and its best to just not travel the path of what ifs.
The issue at hand is that Japan is leaving out FACTS from thier history books. No matter how hard the past can be to hear, it must be kept as accurate as possible, and nothing should be left out, lest we forget and make the same mistakes...
Not mentioning things is NOT the same as "Japan rewrites history". Writing new stuff and adding it to their history books would be the same as "Japan rewrites history".EVieira wrote:

Japan’s Textbooks Reflect Revised History
Indeed. The reason we know the full story of what happened with Coventry is because we don't hide our history (though it is kind of glossed over when it comes to the history we learn in school).Deadmonkiefart wrote:

rewrite is equivalent to changing. changing is exactly what they're doing.
the ramifications of pulling a chunk of history out are equal to that of adding a chunk. and by taking a part out, they're effectively adding new things to their history, as it makes japan out to be a kindly conquerer.
If Britain chose to stop teaching the revolutionary war, but continued to teach the colonial period (of the US of course) they'd either have to teach that the US was granted freedom or lead people to believe that the US is still a British holding, neither of which are true, thus a historic rewrite. apply that to the japan situation.
unless of course you're an avid back to the future fan and in your mind's eye rewriting history is physically going back and preventing something.
ur right, we souldnt have used the nukes.... we should have given the Germans American uniforms and made them invade Japan for us....[pt] KEIOS wrote:

honestly, i could understand and even reasonably view the removal from lands. but to start killing them and celebrating their deaths is just fucking sick.
what we did in the Philippines is far worse though.
and how much of that is taught to the general public in the states?Ender2309 wrote:

The most sidetracked thread I've seen in at least a week.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

Maybe you should peel back his sarcasm and look at the point ( I think) he is trying to make. Correct me if I am wrong but I took it as this:Ender2309 wrote:

It was war, our country was, and correctly so, thinking about preserving American lives FIRST, before they concerned themselves with Japanese lives.
It is all conjecture, because it did not happen, but after Iwa Jima and Okinawa, it was determined an invasion of Japan would, in the end, cost more lives on both sides than the bombing took. Like it or not, it does not matter, that was the decision that had to be made and it was a correct one. America cared about its losses, we were, after all, not Russia or Japan.
