So heres the deal My Stryker got blown up today. I got splashed with shrapnel along my hands and face. (Dont ask me how it got through the blast shield along the Top of the stryker I don't know but the blast plates are clear of penetrations, only some minor gouging. But anyways I'm at the aid staion having small bits of metal removed from my body, and they give me this stack of I shit you not 12 pages to fill out. After I fill them out and get a few witnesses, and the medic on scene who treated me to record the Grid of the IED strike and do some sworn statements. (WTF why do they have to have a minimum of 3 sworn statements, the fact my stryker limped into the FOB on 5 of its eight tires, with the right number 3 hub completly blown off) would they need witnesses stating I got peppered with shrapnel. And then came the worst.

The Battalion Surgeon Briefed me on the fact that the army was going to call my wife reguardless of what I signed at the SRP site, and no matter how loud I raised my voice he told "its theater policy next of kin gets notified of any injury or illness." So I asked him ok so what exactly is going to be said? I mean is my wife going to get a call saying "you're husband was injured in iraq" He said something like that, so I asked him ok well will they explain to her it was nothing serious, it was only some shrapnel to the hand and face?
He replied "No, doctor patient privlidge. WTF? So all my wife is going to hear is that I was wounded and she will panic over something so fucking trivial. I hate the Army. Stupid generals.
Now why did i sign a block saying "do not notify my next of kin for injury or illness unless it is life threatening" Its all pointless.
Politics suck.

The first purple heart i recieved all I needed was a casualty feeder card and a witness statement card. Now its a big ass nutt roll. I felt like ball tapping that fool major. Smartess dumbass I have ever met.
And since the power to the phone center is dead she's going to get a phone call before I can warn her.
I have already e-mailed her but those jackoffs are going to wake her ass up and make her panic.

Please discuss the reasons behind this crap.
Why can they ignore my wishes to not notify my wife, yet they cannot honor my wishes and tell her wtf kind of injury i recieved?

That's funny their excuse was that there is no doctor patient privileged -- yet you are the one responsible for allowing/disallowing the release of such information. Not sure how that all works, but i can definitely see where this is going to cause waaaaaaaaay to much needless stress.

I feel for ya, hope she can get the message.

First off, thank you for your service. It's very appreciated. My question to you is why can't you contact her, and if you cannot via phone, why don't you email her with the same story as what you have posted? At least you can try to convey that your alright in the email. It's better than nothing. Stay safe over there.

I have e-mailed her. I just hope she checks her e-mail before she gets the call. And the power to the Phone center was cut due to renovations Its only open during lunch time for the next few days.
Which would be cool, If I was a FOBbit and got lunch breaks, Breakfast and lunch for me comes in a Greenish foil type pouch, shoved ina cardboard box, crammed into a plastic bag.

I swear if I make it out of here Im going to shit on someone very high up the foodchains desk.
Then claim mental stress and post traumatic stress.

I know nothing of army procedures and such, but I think it would be ok if they just let you call her and tell her. Or like, call her from your bedside and state whatever they are required to say and then give you the phone so you can let her know its all good.

Sorry to hear about the bomb. Good job over there buddy. Keep it up! I know its really nothing, but I wear red every Friday as a sign that I support our troops.

I got a hold of her through ahem an unauthorized cellular phone.
She's pretty upset, but so far no one has contacted her so I told her the whole story.
Sometimes no matter how much I ,love being in the army, i truely hate it.

Out here it means sit in your CHU, until the CP needs a runner. So basically I sit in my room, and watch movies, and head to the CP to help with the mail runs, or anything like that. Basically I just sat in my room watched movies and well, got extremely bored.

Nevertheless, I'll echo ATG on this... Good luck CannonFodder (awesome name, btw). I hope your equipment protects you properly next time should you need it in that capacity.

I also hope you're able to clarify things with your wife before she starts to think it was a serious injury. I have no idea why the bureaucracy would be so stupid as to put you in that position, but then again, this is the same government that can't give our soldiers sufficient body armor, but it can still buy new Ford Explorers for contractors.
