Hey. This is a question to anyone here that owns a website/forum that has a lot of members.

When you first started out, how did you get members? Did you just go around to other sites and advertise? Or What?

Just check out www.big-boards.com for an awesome list of the worlds biggest forums, and thats amazing, but i just want to know how they started out.

Thanks.

They're generally unique and effective at what they do. I'd be willing to say that Gaia Online was one of the first roleplay sites on the interwebs. It must've been run well, and word spread and it gained market hold.

Or "Hardware.fr", it was probably one of the first hardware discussion sites for French speakers, and did its job well, so it became popular.

It's a matter of either being one of the first, or offering something far better than what the current competitors have. Granted, it's hard for a startup forum or company to compete against well-known, established sites like GameFAQs or IGN, or BMW or Honda. But if they know what they're doing, and they do it well and better than the others, and do it in a unique manner, then they'll succeed. If they're going to be like all the others, they might as well write a resume and join their competitor's company.

You're just going to have to bust into Crytek and take the game, then give out copies to new members.

I was in the right place at the right time.

Then the reason vanished and they all left again. Now it's a disused corner of the internet used as photobucket for text.
