GUYS! Listen to what USMARINE is saying please...

Its two seperate incidents you are mixing up.

The video is from the war in Iraq when US aircraft attacked a KURD /Spec Ops convoy in North Iraq, this vid is quite old - the BBC reporters were embedded with them.

The second incident was more recent but is in the news again due to the court hearing and was in the British drive with the US troops from the south.

Stop getting agitated, they are two seperate events.

the first was caused as the Spec ops guys wanted tac air support on Iraqi tanks who were close to the convoy, the ordinance missed and hit the convoy by accident.

the second incident was a mistake by the pilots who thought the orange panels on the British vehicles missiles and deliberately aimed for them thinking that they were Iraqi.

Can someone help me out and find both incidents to link to please? The debate regarding how aircraft are used in close air support is interesting though so carry on with your thoughts on this please.

Personnally, I'll go with a sweep over target by aircraft one to get a postive ID of friendlys /bogeys and then attack from aircraft two after a TAC request.

I know what the video is about.  The only reason why i posted this link...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,2032055,00.html

...is because the two stories are similar incidents.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

USmarine the Kurds have set up a semi-autominous state in the north, they are currently coming to blows with the Iraqi's over their perceived capital city (which has a shed load of oil under and around). they want it back as Saddam moved in Iraqi's from the south to populate it (think Northern ireland).
they have their own armed forces and suffer very few bombings. they even patrol their boundry. they also help in iraq by lending units to the US for that "local support".
they hope to set up a homeland for the kurds. as you can tell Iran and iraq are pissed about that.

no idea about the tanks however

Friendly fire is a part of war. It is unavoidable. Although the frequency of American on British friendly fire incidents seems to be worryingly high. Maybe the US military should reassess their ROE or look into whatever is causing such a disproportionate number of friendly fire incidents?

I know about the kurds.  But they were not in Afghanistan last time I checked.

I think so.  It seems to be one of those "teams" that work and train with the Kurds.

Sucks real life doesn't have blue tags or X'd out vehicles or we can't turn FF off. Accidents are bound to happen in war so blaming Americans and saying "blow those yank fuckers into oblivion" is plain stupid. Adding on to that, claiming it was on purpose is ignorance at its best.

Gah wrong damn country, forgive me Usmarine for wasting your time , i have no idea

friendly fire may happen in all previous wars, but when it gets to a point you can drop a bomb into a 5m hole, there has got to be a problem somewhere along the line. i agree the pilots usually are not to blame as they have to ask for permission to drop (as stated previously). so better information to the controllers i assume would be the best way to stop this.
along with better recognition training for everyone involved naturally.

Only as a percentage and as a result of media attention. Modern wars have friendly fire as a high percentage of casualties because hardly anyone gets killed through enemy fire. In WW2 far more people died from it, but the media didn't say, and far more was occurring from enemy fire.

We DO need some sort of system to make the Americans know without fail that we're not the enemy, though.
