You assume we understand the age of the universe. It wasn't ten years ago they had the age of civilization pegged at 25000 years old, which is laughable now.
It wasn't 30 years ago we were being warned of an impending ice-age, lol.

The laws of physics should always come with a disclaimer *

You're absolutely right. I was thinking throughout the writing that I need to stipulate that my theory is based on the premise that our understanding of the make up of the universe, while not complete, is pretty accurate. It also was based on the assumption that the aliens didn't have some extremely advanced form of technology that we haven't even dreamt of. Unfortunately, I forgot to put those caveats in my rather long winded speech.

Let's hope the aliens do have something up their sleeves. I do stand behind my statement about the governments not being able to cover up such a meeting (although I wouldn't say that about some of the corporations).

A whole basket of philosophical stuff here....physicalism vs dualism...the "transporter copy" problem...

Let me get this straight. These aliens traveled thousands of light years to earth and they crash... Hell, even humans don't always crash.  If there were aliens, we would probably be ruled right now.

If Aliens were out there and were advanced enough to make it to Earth I don't think it would neccessarily be a good thing for us. To make it here they would be far, far superior to us intellectually and technologically, we would be mere savages to them and the history on this planet of 'more advanced' people's treatment of 'less advanced' people is not good. Look what we did to the American Indians, the Aborigines, our treatment of animals and so on (not that I'm equating the former with the latter but they were perceived as 'savages' by the foreign invaders). What is there to suggest Aliens would not do the same? We would have nothing to offer a more advanced species.

I believe Steven Hawking has expressed this opinion before if I'm not mistaken.
Not necessarily. A planetary society and an interstellar society are two different animals. Requisite technology for extra-solar travel may preempt the necessity for invasion. I'm sorry, but I don't buy into the 'resources and food' scenario.
