Spry, a pillar of her local community in Gloucestershire, staunchly denied all the claims made against her and insisted the only physical punishment she ever used was "a smack on the bottom".

Is it just me or is it routinely devoutly religious people whom commit the most heinous crimes?

Examine the Catholic church and its proven track record of sheltering and protecting child molesters.
Consider the Muslim fanatics that saw peoples heads off, or the rabid Jewish extremist who assasinate peace minded leaders.

Clearly the repressive nature of these religions is causing mental problems. Or it could be that evidence is mounting that religion is more of a catalist for evil than a force for good.
I often wonder if we would be bothering with the Middle East if our president and many others in America didn't view this conflict as Biblical.

i see your points, but without religion, we cannot assume we would "know peace". take military leaders for illustration, killing osama alone will not cease the fundamentals and face of terrorism. other leaders will take power and assume possibly more devastating control (the face of osama being religion).

literally, without religion we would have no sense of right and wrong, and no people cannot live without such a sense. this is why i suggest our sense of right and wrong will be derived from some unknown (as illustrated above, osama's replacement). *thinking/confused about own statements*

I am sickened by these people, i am not a religious person my self but to blame these religios nuts is not really correct how many non religious people abuse kids: answer we don't really know as it is never reported as "blah blah agnostic or blah blah non believer did this to child A". I am not sticking up for religion as they are in them selves abuse of peoples free will and are only a form of control for the docile masses who drink beer and watch crappy TV shows and then go to church in the belief they will go to "heaven" my arse.

But all child abusers should be put to death slowly over a course of a week or 2 so they can suffer the horror that they them selves have dished out to others.

Note however that is was a fellow Jehovah's Witness that became concerned over the well-being of the children, and no place in that article, as I recall, does that woman claim to have used religious justification for her actions. Also it is rather blunt to discredit large populations because of the acts of a miniscule minority. And yes, it is a minority, for the few hundred molesters that have been unearthed in the Catholic church, we seem to have neglected the millions of other happy members of that institution. You cannot incriminate the entirety on the basis of a few insane individuals, which this woman obviously was.

Radical Islam on the other hand is a completely different matter. They justifiy all or most of their actions through the quran and whatever religious dogma they can conjure up to support such acts. That is why it should be of far greater concern in everyones eyes concerning the topic you have presented.

And what about these Jewish assassinations? I don't recall those.

That's not true. A sense of right and wrong is not a by product of religion. Adhesion to a moral code is promoted by religion, but that means very little. There are probably more people that use religion in a negative way than those who act morally entirely due to religious beliefs.

Atheism is actually inherently ignorant for it suggests that one who is an atheist would not believe in God even if he came down from heaven in person and told you he existed to your face. Agnostic is what I would consider myself. I don't think God exists but if, on the off chance, he happened to descend from on high and tell me he did exist I wouldn't be so ignorant as to say 'No, I don't believe in you' ...that's as ignorant as blindly following a faith and denying everything else.

Yeah sure. But until he does, my beliefs will have to stick to the "Occam's Razor" principle...ie, what's most likely or probable, and that doesn't leave our mythical deity much of a chance.....

No, it isn't.

Moral and ethical behaviour is the product of social evolution, nothing to do with religion. Religion is just a means of getting people to stick to a specific moral code. If you read some books on ethics (Ethics by Plato would be a good place to start) you'll notice there was little, if any connection to religion, in Europe at least - although these days the world operates pretty much under European ideals. There are also many books by biologists, such as Prof. Winston on how our instincts have changed as a result of this social evolution, making people naturally more ethical.
