i downloaded a pdf of the comic, but i havent had a chance to read it. if it didnt follow the story well, it sure hit dead on with the visuals. most of the scenes and dialog matched up to the movie perfectly on a brief skim through...oug wrote:

It's like whatever was added so that the novel could turn into a movie was totally inconsistent with Miller's spirit. A damn shame if you ask me, because Miller did a fucking brilliant job with his novel, and he was probably fucked by the makers of the film.
as far as im concerned, it was a great movie and worth the watch.
i have the graphic novel (all numbers) and the hardcover. FRom what i have seen in the trailer, it resembles frank´s miller work. I hope they keep it that way..

Anyways, I was of course the first to vote: YES! And YES I did see it over the weekend. "L o v e d - i t!"
I am so glad it was an image driven movie. I don't need any setup for myth or history, that knowledge already exists inside me.
It really worked for me because it is simply true to mythical form: the hero leaves society; and goes into the darkness of a nether-world (the wilderness); and learns the secrets of this world (in this case a true hardness; he is reborn, like a marine, hard); defeats a great beast (in the wilderness); then returns (with what he has learned: he is spiritually reborn: hard, reasoning, proud but without ego) as a being dedicated to his society fully prepared to sacrifice himself for that which is greater than the self: the whole (society), reason & the cause of freedom.
Then it's time to bash some fucking heads, hack some arms off, pierce the heart of an enemy at arms reach! Then it's time to wax laconically about fate, about certain death, eat an apple, and bash some more fucking heads in!
The image sequences (the violent action) has moments of near perfection. And it all culminates as a symbolic meaning - the 300-sacrifice, as a symbol, as representation, as a call - to end mysticism and tyranny as forces driving society.

Really? Because there are at least 20 scenes and stills you can take from the movie which are almost exact replicates of panels in the book.oug wrote:

Saw it, loved it. Over the top violence, great visuals, good story. I think this movie was right on par with Sin City, and I loved that movie too. I'm getting this as soon as it comes out on dvd. Frank Miller has yet to disappoint me.

Great movie. But you have to love blood! Really good movie, lot of fight. The Spartan were incredible warrior. One of the best movie I ever seen.
