- How to fly: Some tips
F-35 vs. SU-34 on Oman -- who should win this? I'm pretty new to Oman, and tonite some noob kept hopping in the mig. I was having a fairly tough time taking out the enemy SU-34, he ended up evading for a while until some good Mig pilot handed me my ass. Should this be an easy kill? I'm pretty fast at downing most pilots in a J-10 or a Mig-29, I'm trying to work on my F-35 skills a bit.
F35-owns the bomber. it turns so slow you can MG it down on a full bank without missing. if you get shot down by the su-34 you really need to go play a LOT more single player in the jets. come in on top of the su and aim for the cockpiut with the guns, it should never survive.turkeybacon wrote:

Zen....
Just a couple of more questions if you don't mind.
Watching your movies I noticed you have the "sorry" message set to some easy access, how do you do that?
Second... to fly a chopper do you set your joystick deadzones? It seems to me that this is the trick to stabilize a helo in BF2. Problem I can't find this available for MS joysticks.
Thanks

1. I just grab the mouse, thats why everytime I say sorry my plane continues in a straight path. I don't tk too much so I haven't mapped it to my joystick. You could easily map it to the joystick POV with joy2key if you wanted but hopefully you don't tk that much lol.RafaDel wrote:

2. No I didn't set a dead zone, I actually like the smallest dead zone possible. Basically learning to fly helos with a joystick takes like triple the time it does for planes (and takes even longer to master), but once you get used to it, its actually a lot of fun. All I can suggest is just practice, tweaking settings may help a bit, but big dead zones = sloppy controls and poorer reaction. You have to master minor movements to be really good with a chopper, tweaking the collective and the joystick, but one big tip I can get you, is if you are having trouble turning (due to momentum of the chopper) cut the collective, turn, and power the collective back up.
I'm ok at flying. Better with choppers than I am with jets. I'd do better if I had a joystick
Read Zen's aviators guide... For planes joystick owns![Spec]-=Colonel_Zero=- wrote:

Hey I just bought a joystick.
And all in all I'm kinda disappointed.
It has a twist axis.
I am not sure what you mean by spring z axis though. It does move back to the center automatically.
But the main question is how do you program it to be able to look around in your cockpit without taking your hands off the joystick.

Well, I got a joystick and I can say that I am used to it. But I wanna ask you something... How can I use the "MAIN RADIO" communication? (you know... the menu with "SPOTTED", "I NEED A RIDE", etc) I press the MAIN RADIO button (the menu appears on the screen) but I cannot trigger any of the choices (I have made one button on the joystick to work as "FIRE")... Also, how can i sycle between the options of RADIO using the joy?
Go to the guide and search for joy2key it is explained there and also you can search this post as it was answered here as well. I barely play BF2 anymore so I am rarely around
wow thank you for your hard work.
Hi Zen. Just wanted to say hello. Logged in to a wake server few days ago and hoped to see my mentor (you) owne the skies in a J-10. But wtf? you only drove arround in a tank for several rounds!?
But 52/0 KDR was realy not bad, maybe you should write a tank guide as well?

The only flying I did was on [cMc] server, Dailian plant 24/7, I shot the admins down in the jet too much and resulted in this:
who is this capitalist dude who pwned you 31 times??
Please tell me he was f35 and you in a j10!!

The US economy is a giant Ponzi scheme. And 'to big to fail' is code speak for 'niahnahniahniahnah 99 percenters'
If you read this thread you will see this is the Q I always get asked.Stubbee wrote:

Short version: over 1 year ago I was eating dinner afk at gulf of oman spawn, and I guess this guy just kept waiting for me to spawn and killing me. By the time I came back the map had changed so I didn't even know I had a shiney new 31 deaths lol. I didn't get a purple heart because I had no kills so thats the only positive lol.
OK ,so I'm a decent flyer (accurate at bombing and gunning with the MG) but my only problem is trying to evade AA missiles once they are locked on to me and already flying at me. Also ,after watching your vids (I'm primarily a F35 user since my play style is ground force suppression and yes, I agree that the J-10 is gay) I realise that most of your missile shots easily hit targets flying straight or when changing directions. On the servers I play (since there are no MY BF2 servers I have to play on SG or AU ones) I average a ping of 60-130.
Will that affect my missile hit rate ? I've tried dogfighting against a J-10 and I was right behind his 6 and I thought I would have struck the killing blow (he was flareless and smoking) when I fired a salvo of 2 missiles only to see my missiles fly UNDER the J-10 completely missing it. Had to kill it by MGing it down.
Edit : Yes, I fire my missiles only when they fly straight or changing directions

My experience with ping while flying seems to be pretty irrelevant when flying (unless you are like 150+) simply because planes and choppers hit boxes are large, they can't bunny hop (etc), and your deviation is small (relatively speaking here), plus missiles are server controlled not controlled by your pc whether they hit or not. What I am saying is, ping will have a very small effect unless you have a high packet loss (eg the server isn't registering you fired at all) while ping has a way more noticeable effect on infantry then on vehicles for many obvious reasons.
If you want to hit a 10 in a 35 what you should do is only fire missiles when you are far enough away that they have a chance to hit, but not so far away that they will never hit. There seems to be a nice medium range that 35 missiles will hit a 10 but only like 1/10 engagements if you do it right. The better way is to never use your missiles in the 35 and rely only on gunning. Just get used to exactly where you need to shoot (eg how much to lead) a 10 in different turning conditions and especially light them up when they fly straight over the runway to reload. Only novice-mid level player will get shot down regularly by an f35 though. MGing will always be your best bet though, but it requires a lot more practice then the retarded missile system. Ever since they changed AA I've noticed I rely less and less on gunning planes down and more on missiles because its so damn lazy and you can just go back to bombing which is more points. Obviously gun choppers down though, don't get lazy with them as missiles rarely get a kill on their own.

Okay, what about evading missiles ? I've seen people dodge missiles fired at them. Any tips ?
*bump*
Erm ,okay so I finally managed to shoot down a couple of J-10s with a F35 but it was extremely frustrating...I mean, it's as though as if they can MAGICALLY have the missiles fly above or under them !! WTF is with their hit boxes !?!?

Newly updated the guide. Added embedded videos, and tweaked the content here and there. Also I suggest adding fly-by view to your joysticks, I have used this for about 8 months now but was too lazy to update the guide.
Finally, please submit any "kick" or "ban" in-game screens you have of yourself or your friends getting kicked or banned due to flying! I am making a list in the guide as you can see if you check it out. You can email me @ [email protected].

I had to reset my joystick, and it still just all wrong, the sensitivity is too choppy, I have lowered the settings and then it's not responsive enough. I had it right before I just can't get it smooth anymore?
What joystick is it for starters? It sounds poor right off the bat if it has 'choppy' sensitivty.
too bad I got kicked RIGHT after that hehe

ST290, Saitek, I know it's not at your level. But I did have it set correctly and running smoothly when I got it for my b'day in July. Then I did a reinstall, and I just can't get it back to smooth again. I can barely take off at times, I have tweaked the mouse sensitivty, and it's between to slow and just to damn choppy. I am bummed cause I did actually have some kills before the reinstall.
Do you have any other games you can test the joystick in to see if it is choppy there too? I've had a few joysticks but I have never experienced choppyness in how a joystick tracks, that doesn't sound right at all.
If it does it in all games, then yes its the joystick and I suggest you google the joystick name and choppyness or "problem" and filter through the posts until you find something helpful. If it only does it in BF2 however, then you know there is some kind of conflict which you may or may not resolve by dicking around with BF2 (eg repatch, reinstall, check controls.con etc.).
