Hi,

As mentioned in subject title i would like to ask you all for some advice on my ram problems.

Here are my Specs:

P4 3.4GHz and 512MB

I have managed to play without any major problems such as recurring lag etc, but feel I need to upgrade my RAM after all compared to my processor it is pretty mediocre and is the bottleneck of my system. The problem is what memory to chose??? Here are the options, I would like your help please!

Do I go for 2.5GB total DDR PC3200 @ £115.00 or...

1.5 total DDR PC4000 @ £85.00

Am i better off going for mass space i.e. 2.5GB total or would it be better with the smaller PC4000 option.

Would the PC4000 be much better than the PC3200?

IMO i think the 2.5GB would be better, but i am not that technical and am wondering if the PC4000 option would be better even though there is less total memory. Help!

I'm assuming you have 4 RAM slots on your mobo, correct? You ideally want to match up your sticks so that they will run in performance mode. ie: 4 sticks of 256MB or 4 sticks of 512MB, etc. Be sure to buy the same brand and if that's not possible, try to get RAM with very similar timings. You can see your current timings and clock speeds using cpu-z

as far as which type of RAM...depends on if your mobo will support DDR4000, if so, make sure all your sticks are 4000 or it will take on the speeds of your slower RAM.

Yeah i have 4 slots, are you suggesting i get 2 x 1GB and scrap the old RAM units?

I thought i may as well keep old units or would that hinder the ability of the new ones, i was gonna do the following set up:

2 x 256 (old ones) + 2 x 1gb PC3200 (new ones)

or...

2 x 256 (old ones) + 2 x 512 PC4000 ( new ones)

What do you think?

I would just put in 2 new 1gb RAM and keep the 2x 256 RAM as back up in case of problems.

I would let white fusion handle installing the ram for you.

So move old ram from slots 1 & 2 to 3 & 4, and put new units in slots 1 & 2 as main units?

no just remove the 2x 256 from slot 1 & 2, and put the 2x 1GB in there.

So you all think 2 x 1GB of PC3200 would be better than 2 x 512MB of PC4000?

unless you are going to overclock YES

EDIT: even then getting more ram is better than slightly higher speeds. go for 2 x 1GB

Hi all,

Thanks for your help, I decided to purchase 2 gig of PC3200 memory a couple of days ago, and today they arrived. I quickly and successfully installed them.

I chose to remove the old units (2 x 256mb), as you all suggested (so currently have 2 gig), but in the process noticed that the old units were the same PC#, which is PC3200. I am just wondering if I would benefit even more by putting them back in the empty slots, to have a total of 2.5 gigs, all at PC3200.

What do you all think?

You don't have to reply to this.
I just got a quick answer from Max on Xfire. I would advise anyone with PC probs to ask him, he certainly helped me!
Cheers Max
