"Since 1985, that's been the gist of Pizza Hut's Book It, an incentive program used by 50,000 schools nationwide to reward young readers with free pizzas. The program is now under attack by child-development experts who say it promotes bad eating habits and turns teachers into corporate promoters."

I remember this as a kid, as I am sure some of you do.  WTF is the problem now?

Read a book, get some pizza = BAD

Don't get kids to read books = BAD

What is their solution?  Read a book get some broccoli?

People will do anything to ruin fun. More of the way to punish a collective for the weight of a few. It's just like schools that cut back on lunches for the minority (fat children) yet at the same time leave the rest unnourished.

The problem is that Pizza Hut is not a union shop subject to the scam that is everything to do with unions.
They are a private entity who probably didn't make a campaign contribution this year so they are getting fucked by the man.

Figures.

lol, one tiny, note even 9 inch pizza a month is the sole cause of childhood obesity.

As soon as I read the title, the first thing that popped into my mind was Pizza Hut.

Well shit. I've done that a few times when I was in elementary school. (I think I still have one of the badges gathering dust somewhere) It wasn't what got me reading (I was reading long before then), but it gave me an incentive to read even more.

I don't see why this is under attack. It's an excellent program IMO. I haven't gotten fat from eating those pizzas, why? I actually ran around outside and burned it off.

Nowadays where Internet/PC/TV dominates a kid's choice of activities, I'd say the Book It Program at least gives reading a chance.

In Britain there was a similar big fuss over an offer from some chocolate bar manuracturer who let you gain tokens from chocolate bars wrappers to buy sports equiptment for your school. I thought it was a decent idea, may as well let the kids work off some of the fat they're eating already.

If someone gave me pizza to read books I'd have read more books. Sounds like a good idea to me.

But the food is not the problem.  I did this when I was a kid, and I was not a fat ass, nor were my friends.  The problem is, instead of going outside and playing after school, they are playing WoW or BF2 all night.

Exactly. And children are so quick to be diagnosed with A.D.D. these days and given riddalin. We had a solution to that when I was a kid. It was something that releived the hyperness in us naturally. It was called recess. Complete unorganized running around throwing shit that was not supposed to be thrown and trying not to get "coodies" from the girls, who ironically enough, were the ones who got STD's in high school.
