Simple solution - Use the money to introduce mandatory global testing for AIDS and to establish special "happy camps" for those with AIDS. Problem solved.

Perhaps this is another case where we need to try to stop it in our own country first.  There is no cure, I know there are "treatments" that can prolong life, but it's a virus and unfortunately like all viruses it can mutate so scientists really can't keep up with it.

So IMO to answer your question... yes.  We should be pumping that money into finding a cure for the disease instead of running around acting like we are doing something to help.

The developed world has a big aids problem, even with all the contraception, school educational projects, advertising campaigns etc. In Africa they get shit all information or direction apart from the odd charity organisation who puts most of their resources into building a new HQ were the staff get free fruit and massages on demand. Could be as bad here if we didn't get such info and every stage.

Why waste time trying to cure the cold?  It's not usually lethal.  I sort of see your point in that we need to figure out how to stop a virus, and that is the basic virus, but why start at the bottom?

And as for the vaccination... again AIDS/HIV has already mutated.  You have to take into consideration our current vaccinations.  The flu for example... there are so many strains of the influenza virus it is not possible to guarantee you will not contract the flu that season/year with or without the shot.  A vaccination is a crap-shoot.  It's an OK buffer, but it's not a be-all-end-all for it.

JahManRed you are right on about the HQ.  That's why I hate giving to charities because such a large portion goes to things other than the actual cause.

Most of them don't realise they have H.I.V until full blown A.I.D.S kicks in. By that time they have infected. Yknow, maybe its just the scientist in me, but I think it is a little overarching to say that there is no cure for a virus. For all we know, there may be and we just haven't discovered it yet.

In the meantime, we have to examine the dilemma.

What is more important? The right of someone to keep their medical history private? Or the right of another human being to not be unwittingly infected by a deadly disease.

I personally feel that the second right is more important, and thus HIV bearers should be forced to disclose their disease to their partners before having sex. However, I don't know how you could do/enforce such a law without physically marking HIV+ individuals ala a "Scarlet Letter" type approach, but of course thats too Orwellian to be plausible.

I like to believe that someone is going to figure out how to kill a virus, but it just doesn't exist right now.  What I'm saying is, with the tools we have available at this moment, we can only treat the symptoms and not stop the disease.

Imagine what a break-through it will be when someone actually does figure out how to stop a virus!
