Because if a nation that has nuclear weapons is getting beat too badly, and they think that their only chance for survival is through the use of nuclear weapons, then they're gonna use them.  Its basic human nature.  So by saying that Israel's gonna get owned if they bomb you, you're really saying "Israel's gonna turn us into a radioactive global pockmark if we attack them through hezbollah (which Iran funds) and conventional forces (assuming you could get them through the vastly superior US forces) because they bombed us because we were trying to make nukes so we could nuke them first."  Might be a bit of a run on sentence, but I think it gets the point across.  And please dont give us that "Iran's making nuclear power, not nuclear weapons" because you all are sitting on a figurative ocean of hydrocarbons of various sorts.  By the way, those are much cheaper to extract and use as opposed to Uranium and the necessary technology development required to use that Uranium.   And let's not forget the costs to you diplomatically as every other major civilized nation that has balls and morals (rare, i know) is trying to keep you from succeeding in your little nuclear physics endeavor.  Those two facts make the probability of your little foray into fission being a quest for cheap power completely negligible.

Edit: P.S. If you all are really into cheap and affordable power that doesn't pollute the environment, why aren't you contributing to any of the various projects dealing in nuclear fusion.  You have access to the Persian gulf, which would give you an inexhaustible supply of Deuterium and Tritium with which you could sustain your people's energy needs indefinitely.  Oh, but you can't make a bomb with only fusion, right?  Even the most sophisticated fusion bombs have fissile cores.  And there's another good reason as to how we all know that you are talking out your asses when you say you want nuclear power, not nuclear weapons.

Nice to see israel difusing the situation again...always the moral lowground...

Same thing happened in the 80's.  Iraq had a nuke planet, threatened Israel, Israel bombed it, the us said to the press "Shame on them" then called there PM an said "Good job".

They did it once, they will do it again,  Don't FUCK with the Israeli's!
