Should Puerto Rico be independent? Should Puerto Rico be given statehood? Do Puerto Ricans celebrate 'dependence' day on July 4th. Discuss.
"Dependence day." I like that.
No they probably couldn't keep a country running for even three years.
No they probably couldn't keep a country running for even three years.
yet they wouldnt invade countries and raise world terrorism
Speaking from experience, dependence day is not celebrated in PR -- at least in comparison to that in the States.
The question with regards to pro state hood / pro independence / pro status quo is all but clear. Each side has his strong points, but honestly the political corruption in PR is going to destroy any sort of change from the status quo...you would be surprised to see the amount of polarization of the political parties. They will go to any extent to discredit others and simply ignore their own members committing similar harm. On second thought this isn't in the least bit surprising lol.

Referendum time.....
It should be up to the inhabitants to decide who their ruler is. If their current ruler doesn't like it...

I think Northern Ireland should be owned by the UK without dispute.

Fact: Purto Rico's population is more than New Hampshire, Massachustts, Vermont, and Rhode Island combined
For those who dont know, puerto rico is about the size of RI
For those who dont know, puerto rico is about the size of RI

Does it smell like RI? If you've surfed RI you will understand what I mean.
it has been two years since i had been there.
at the time, they were having local elections.
they seemed to have quite a turnout, and it was very partisan.
when i asked a resident about the possibility of statehood and how it might get voted on,
he had said "depends who you ask: many for, many against."
if native Puerto Ricans can't decide for themselves, who would have the right to
choose for them? i don't think thier statehood would suit the interests of those
who couldn't afford to buy Puerto Rican votes.

There's a reason why we have a Debate & Serious Talk section.
If you can't be mature and check your problems/issues/differences at the door when you enter threads, then don't bother posting in them at all.

After reading this thread, I laugh that I get the warnings for spam.
They don't mind. I think they were offered independence or statehood or both and just wanted to keep it as is.
Puerto Rico seems to mostly prefer its current status.
They get funded by us, protected by us, and they don't have an income tax (federal or otherwise). They don't have any elected figures in our government, but I think they are willing to deal with that.
We should give them only two options: statehood or independence. That way, they'll either start paying into the system or we won't be paying for their livelihoods.

Puerto Rico speaks mostly Spanish, no? If an official language were to be delcared this could cause a few problems if it were to be english-only;
Go english-only and you alienate a state.
Go dual english/spanish and you lend legitimacy to many illegal immigrants.
DILLEMA TIME!!!

Good points...
In the event of Puerto Rico becoming a state, we'll need a dual language system. Considering how Spanish is a practical language to know throughout much of the world, I wouldn't be against this.
You're right that it would complicate the illegal immigrant situation, but in a way, it would improve the situation. We'd at least be better able to communicate with them and Mexico in general.

No Major, America is pure goodness condensed into 50 states made out of sugar and sweetness.Major_Spittle wrote:

Do you ever consider that a nation may have both good and bad elements?
Come on, you know how this works. Saying that America, nation and government-wise has done ill in the past and present means you hate America and everything good and decent. Which is roughly like saying if someone notices their kids get bad grades and wants them to do better, they actually hate their kids and want them to die. The uberpatriots and their blind love of America do more damage to this country than any ammount of criticism ever will.Braddock wrote:

The " uberpatriots " are loyal to the constitution above all else.
We view lack of leadership in areas such as border enforcement as capital crimes.
We believe the government has turned its back on the Constitution and swears loyalty to some shadowy concept of haves, and have naughts.
The two party system is the problem.
