This is getting REALLY annoying. BF2 just won't load at all. It started with that all the sudden. Then I pathed it, it didn't help. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, then all the sudden I couldn't get SF installed because the installer died at me. I wen't on uninstalling, installing and patching for a few days.
Then I thought it must be my (2 weeks old) XP that's broken.  So today I reinstalled XP (again), applied all hotfixes, installed drivers and setup the system and installed BF2.
Well, it worked.. once :(
Now one hour later when I try to start it it just won't load. The BF2 splash comes and then noting more happens. Rebooting didn't help either. Now what the hell could be causing this?! My XP is totally clean and the BF2 install is totally fresh! I deleted the profile folder in My Documents but that didn't change anything. Is it some new windows hotfix that's causing this?
It's totally unbelivable that it only worked one damn time after a complete system reinstall...

Did you update your drivers when you reformatted?  Try that.  If that doesn't work, then I'm clueless.

There are no newer drivers available... :S
Yesterday I found out that if I deleted the BF folder in my documents and launched regular BF2 instead of SF it would start. Then I could retrieve my account and exit and copy a few settings files from the old profile to get my key mappings and to skip the supportive man telling me what to do.
After this I could lauch SF and play it. I noticed that SF will crash at once if I spawn at the MEC base on Iron Gator though...

Wow, you got some seriously messed up stuff going on. If you are having all that trouble from a truly fresh setup. However, you copying over things could possibly bring the bad back with it. I'm not positive about that though.

Do you play other games? Any other trouble points with the system on the whole? All your fans working?

I just started over with a complete fresh setup. New windows install and new BF2 install. This is how DICE sad thanx for the money. No problems with fans either and the HW is pretty new. With my old windows install the explorer could crash at login though. But no other games crashed and no problems with other program. Not now or then.

But, at the moment SF seems to work after the retrieve-account-via-regular-BF thing. Yesterday I also managed to spawn on the MEC base at Iron gator (the times it crashed was when I swapped to Mec and spawned there).

I suspect that it was something with windows update that messed it up from the beginning, I haven't installed/uninstalled anything. Automatic Updates are turned off and shall stay that way, since it works now NOTHING may be changed anymore

i have the same problem with iron gator/mec base and switching. i think its just a glitch dude.

start bf2 as normal

if nothing happens open up device manager and click on processes

then click under the user tab and see if you can see BF2.exe anywhere in the list

i had the same problem once but that was bacause i was starting bf2 as a high process

i just made a new shortcut from bf2.exe and problem solved

I still have the same issue too.  I even replaced my 128 MB ATI 9650 card with an EGforce 7800 GS OC card and it did not help.  I've uninstalled BF2, special forces, and one of the ten dollar add ons.  I then reinstalled only BF2, applied the latest 1.4 patch, and nothing has fixed the problem that it just will not load.  However, every so often, I try to run BF2 and yesterday it loaded and played fine.  I got out and tried to run it again...nothing. 

One of the comments for your question was is BF2 running in the processes.  The answer is NO.
