“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world - no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”
-President Woodrow Wilson

What do you take from this statement?

I take from that statement that not much has changed in quite some time. The transition from 'democracy' to 'democracy by dollars' occurred a long time ago, not just in USA but in much of the western world and especially Latin America.

I have to first ask when he made the aforementioned statement? Context is extremely useful in analysing the meaning of any quote.

From what I gather it was around 1912/1913 during the lobbying of the Aldrich Plan.

Thanks!

To analyse:

“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The overall theme of this is 'regret'. I personally don't have enough knowledge of the Aldrich 'Plan', but from what I gather from looking up in a few books, this resulted in the formation of The Federal Reserve Act. However, I also can see that Wilson seems to be pleased with this and sees it as a dawn of a new era in business. Indeed, his political clout got it recognised and passed (2 years before, the Aldrich 'Bill' had been rejected). I thin the context seems confused. For this reason, I struggle to either believe the quote, or the context in which you think it comes from.
Just as a piece of general knowledge for you:
Wilson may have been a great, ambitious man, but he was also an avid supporter of the Klu Klux Klan. Just remember that. Do not let it cloud your judgement of him, just remember that even the most outward seemingly pleasant man can hide, to modern day society, dark truths.
All the best,
Andy

It's interesting to see the way different presidents perceive the downfall of the country. Fifty years before Wilson warned us of the decline of the popular rule, Lincoln warned us of the merging of government and corporate interests. Eisenhower gave his famous military-industrial complex" speech when leaving office in '61. I don't think there's much doubt that all of these fears have been realized to an extent. We have seen more than one president come into office after losing the popular vote. The serving of corporate interests is so glaringly obvious that no one even tries to hide it anymore. Just look to Halliburton's profit margins to see Ike's predictions have come true.

What can we do about it? I don't know. Maybe foolishly, I believe that most of the government is mostly uncorrupted and the system we have in place works pretty well. Revolution is not the answer, but a lot of people are unwilling to educate themselves before the polls open.

hate to derail but...

does anyone besides me think Wilson was a horrible president? Personally, I think his lack of resolve in dealing with the league of nations proposal set the stage as far as condition in Germany for the rise of Hitler. Leaving the French and Brits to rape the Germans postwar was the wrong solution and the fact that as the country with the most intact after that war, im quite disappointed in him... Yeah there was no way for him to predict the future...but if I beat the shit out of someone and then take all their crap, I wonder if they will resent me?

I've seen it argued, that he was the worst president ever.
