Heh, call me biased but

I vote for ohio class sub. Nukes, seal deployment, tomahawks and stealth...course I was on an Ohio Class sub so maybe im biased. But I would imagine a good sub commander could give an entire battle group a run for their money. Or he could just cheat and nuke them...Either way, I think the sub is the most deadly modern naval platform. Having seen a missile boats capability vs our surface fleet makes me pretty sure of this.

Come one Fancy.  You and I both know that carriers are just so that Admirals can..............compensate for deficiencies .

The quickest way to render a Carrier useless is to drop clusters on its deck. Of course if you can get a sub or a destroyer close enough to drop a few torpedos in the water and break its keel then that works too.  But a carrier that cannot launch planes is useless.

Its hard enough, literally to get a single missile through a carrier task force to actually hit a ship, you needs a saturation attack of hundreds of missiles. The only counries that I really give any chance of sinking one of our Nimitz class carriers(possible enemies, we are excluding the UK and others) are Russia and China, even then the chances are so low that....

a cruise missile or 2 should do the trick from the mainland

Given the tremendous anti-torpedo protection put into a Nimitz, as well as the sheer size, one torpedo is unlikely to sink it. A Nimitz sized vessel would probably need 4-5 ADCAP sized torpedos to break its keel--and that's only if a submarine can get a shot. Keep in mind that there are several ships in the battle group devoted to anti-submarine combat. Russia accepted this and, during the Cold War, they considered developing nuclear anti-ship mines to counter the supercarriers.

USMC here. We need to understand if our taxi is safe to ride in.

The chances of getting an aircraft or missile through is much higher then getting a submarine through to within 10,000 yards or so.  I would think that a carrier group vs carrier group is much more likely to be an even battle then most suspect.  Its not like the other navies just sit there and don't train.

You have the missile intradiction (Aeiges?) destroyers, AA guns, F-18's, F-14's, etc. in our battlegroups but in a full on battle their and thousands and thousands of missiles fired and the tracking computers are not going to be able to track and shoot all of the incoming missiles.  And it is probable that someone might be able to get a squadron through and fire off all of those anti-ship weapons at a closer range giving the computer less tries, although having the mini-guns on there to just rip up the sky might help.

But then B. Spears has a bald head so anything is possible.

Don't believe what you see in the movies.

A carrier battle group has a number of escorts and if the threat of subs is about, they will form an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) screen.  The outer ring of the screen usually comprises a number of Frigates, then the Destroyers and then usually the High Value Units (HVUs) which are the Carriers, Amphibs,  Refuellers etc.  Most (if not all) of these ships would be using active sonar and probably also listening on passive towed arrays.  Then throw in a couple of attack subs and helicopters using dipping sonar and sonobouys and scatter them through-out the screen.

This is a normal carrier battle group and I can tell you that subs infiltrate them all the time.

Submarines are really fucking hard to find and kill.

Those ships and aircraft in the ASW screen are also out there quite a ways and if the threat is great enough then they will use an active sonar which no sub can hide from.  In fact I wouldn't put it past any navy surface ships to use an active sonar on a regular schedule to make sure that an enemy sub hasn't gotten within a certain range.

And yes I know they try to keep an entire assault group hidden at sea and that isn't why they don't go pinging around like mad, but don't put it past them to ping every once and a while to flush out whats near them.
