When I first read this this story I was at first kind of like, what are they thinking. But then I started doing a little research and found out a possible answer;
I hope this works for them and that there are no terrorist attacks in Italy.
Basically, Italy is making a token gesture to appease the Muslim Extremist in their own midst. Shall I go on?WWW.JAMESTOWN.ORG wrote:
Investigations by the Italian security services since 2001 indicate that Italy has become a platform for al-Qaeda associated terrorist operations in Europe and Iraq. Italy's Muslim population is concentrated in Milan, with an estimated 100,000 Muslims residing in the northern city. Not surprisingly Milan appears to be the base of Italy's extremist network, which has connections to other Islamic radical groups in Europe, specifically in Spain and Germany. The primary focus of the Islamists' activities in Italy appears to have been that of a staging ground for recruiting suicide bombers to conduct attacks against U.S.-led forces in Iraq. Nevertheless, the sizeable presence of determined Islamic militants in Italy make the country a potential target for a major Madrid-style terrorist attack.
So what we have here is another European government living in fear and acting in ways that do not improve their relationship in the U.S. to try to avoid terrorism. I suspect the Italians were a little miffed at the CIA acting in its own borders, but this is a show trial against people who are not even in the country. There is zero chance the U.S. will be sending its intelligence agents to Europe to stand trial.WWW.JAMESTOWN.ORG wrote:
Islamic radicals have been present in Italy in large numbers since 1992, shortly after the defeat of the Red Army in Afghanistan. Like in other European countries, the influx of former mujahideen volunteers from the Arab world had a great impact. Geographically and politically, the center of gravity for the Islamists was North Italy, where thousands of Muslim immigrants live and work.
I hope this works for them and that there are no terrorist attacks in Italy.
