Compared with other countries, the United States has among the highest incarceration rates in the world.

More people are behind bars in the United States than any other country.

As of 2006, a record 7 million people were behind bars, on probation or on parole. Of the total 2.2 million were incarcerated. China ranks second with 1.5 million followed by Russia with 870,000. The United States has 5 percent of the world's population and 25 percent of the world's incarcerated population.

Comment why are there so many U.S. prisoners? Why do we have 2.2 million prisoners in jails out of 8.8 prisoners world wide?

Well, we don't shoot offenders, nor do we tolerate criminals bribing their way out of arrests.  I know there are many factors, but those two come to mind.

Why?  In almost every other civilized country, you don't get locked up for drugs.  You get rehab, you get ongoing life help from counselors, and you get sympathy from others.  Here in the states, you get thrown away.  Search our inmate population numbers, and look at how many are from drugs, you'll be amazed.  I used drug offenders as an example, but mainly my point is that our values are warped.  We feign like lokcing them up will help them, but the only reason we are locking them up is the futile attempt to help ourselves.

Sigh at least the police do their job... But I do believe the US should have a better rehab programs... Throwing criminals to jail just teachers them how to be better criminals...

Our judges don't screw around? Perhaps there wouldn't be the other thread if other countries sentenced their criminals properly. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that if the criminals are in jail they are not out committing the crimes. The catch and release approach doesn't seem to be working out for others.

You don't get locked up for doing drugs, you are locked up for possession or distribution of them.

Legalize pot and reduce drug sentences.  You'll clear out a lot of prison space that way, leaving room for the real criminals like murderers and rapists.

Oh, I'm sorry, has this thread become about self-masturbatory time wasting?

Fact:  Worldwide, the only people who get away with drugs crimes are rich people.  US included.

Pretty much...  this is why the War on Drugs is bullshit.

We should be spending more on rehabs than on prisons.

true.  capital punishment is much different here too.  for example, in egypt you can be put to death for using marajuana.  in india they will not put you in jail, they will just cut your hand off and let you go.  etc.

And in South America the corruption is so high you could probably bribe your way out.

We just have dumb drug laws thanks to mandatory sentencing brought about by the Reagan administration.
