Interesting. We all knew it was coming in our lifetime, building structures on the Moon that is, but how far do you think it will go? Is it feasable or possible to have a small town or even a society on the Moon? That would be further in the future obviously, if at all but what do you guys think?
I'd like to nominate Bubbalo as the first official permanent resident.
Bullshit, don't nominate him!!!
Nominate Me! I want to go!  Besides, like the old black and white movie says, the moon belongs to America (its our flag on there, take that n00bs!)  Oh, and I'm not mentally handicapped, so I would actually be useful on the moon.

On topic though.  I think that as technology becomes more sophisticated we will start to see more and more of this kind of stuff, and it makes me glad.  The only problem I can see is that once we do it, everyone else will want to do it, and then everyone will start claiming territory up there cause they're dumb, and then we'll have our first space war.  With that in mind, I believe that the moon, like Antarctica, should belong to everyone.  And if not everyone, than us (like I said, its our flag on there...).  Or the moon could even be it's own sovereign nation.  If that happens I hope they say right off the bat that there's an IQ requirement... only members of MENSA can live on the moon.  Regardless, I think this development will be a great leap forward for humanity if actually gone through with.

I can see scientific research bases, but not communities, for a range of reasons.
How long could researchers live in the bases though. I mean, wouldnt they need some rugged gear to combat the elements. And its not like the Moon can be cultivated so supplies would need to be brought.
Tbh i see it just like the international space station. They take like half a year shifts, then switch, bringing along new supplies in a new space craft.

And even in space you have some weight due to the fact that all masses have gravitic pull.  It doesn't change the fact that humans have evolved dealing with radically different gravitic effects.  I'm sorry if my statement wasn't exact enough for you.  Next time I'll remember that there are some people dumb enough to take statements literally no matter what the circumstance.

I think that is better for all if the moon colonizing stops to this: i mean... some research structures and so.

We must not transform the Moon in a New Earth.... that would be the worst thing. The Earth has gone to hell nowadays , all you can see that. Do we want the moon to become the same thing? I think no....

Moon must remain the moon ... .we mustn't colonize it and export the concept of ''nationality'' over there , starting a new colonial era... space colonism. This would bring the terror of war only to another level... and a far more destructive one in my thinking.

The us as any other nation should leave out of the moon the concept of country : the moon is a common good , the moon is of the muslims of the christians of scentologist and so on....

Moon doesn't have a nationality , moon must remain neutral

This is my thinking , well , onslaught me now with your words now , i'm a kid

EDIT : naturally , this values for every fucking planet in the fucking universe

Feasible, possible and inevitable.

I thought the Apollo astronauts spotted structures/bases on the dark side of the moon? Anyone else heard this?
Or am I just seeing too many UFO conspiracy videos
"Colonizing the Moon?" Yes - I loved the "Moon Base Alpha" series on TV.

I'll be the first to go to the moon if we can outlaw any and all religion.  No Christians, no Jews, no Muslims, no religion at all allowed.  Practicing religion on the moon would be a death penalty offense.

If you can swing that, I'll give all you Earth bound mutha fuckas a big one finger salute!!!

yeah I bet everyone would want to go on moon, it would be like international water where everything is legal and where anything goes. Or they should just set all the garbage from the landfills to the moon dig a huge whole and set all of the earth garbage to moon.

I predict they'll simply build the bases as geodesic domes buried under a layer of regolith (the proper term, because 'soil' means something full of life, it's not on Earth, and it's thicker than dust but not quite rock) to protect against the solar wind.
We have the technology, it's just a matter of getting the stuff up there. And from the moon, it's a short step to Mars, where we can start terraforming. (Or, for a quick and dirty approach, we can start terraforming FIRST, by repeatedly nuking the icecaps with multi-megaton warheads to get the water airborne. Yet another use for nukes, along with launching spacecraft, digging holes, damming rivers, carving harbours, dropping on people you don't like, and creating post-apocalyptic wastelands for Mel Gibson to drive around in.)
Sliver in Bub's eye, beam in your own. Gravity is only one of the physiological constraints on space travel and colonization. Human beings are pretty specifically adapted for life on this planet, and long-term removal of even non-crucial elements can have dire consequences.

And while low gravity is better than no gravity, it is still no substitute for Earth-norm.

With the reduced gravity, will the first batch of "Moon Babies" grow really tall, as there is less force restricting upward growth?

But in 'Space', because the forces on you are so minute, the net force would essentially mean you are weightless.

Lets not forget what the moon's surface looks like... scarred with craters - it has no atmosphere. Even an 'asteroid' the size of a golf ball - that would usually burn up on Earth - will own any NASA structure on the moon.

Also, the earth has a magnetic field that deflects any solar radiation. The moon does not. That is rather bad for one's health.

No, they will most likely be unable to move properly. In space, humans need to be continually exercising to resist the effect of weightlessness on the muscles. Weightlessness causes muscle tissue to degenerate, because it isn't getting 'worked out'. Babies and young children wouldn't be able to do alot of physical exercise, therefore their muscles would be ruined.

We're all dreaming. I find it difficult to believe America even landed on the moon in 1969 never mind trying to set up colonies there. We hadn't even fully developed the PC by 1969 and yet we managed to land on the moon AND make it home in one piece? I'm sceptical ....I'm not saying they didn't land on the moon but i am doubtful especially given the context of the cold war and the need to present a great victory for capitalism to the world.

Technology is much more advanced today but we're still years from anything dramatic being done on the moon. Aren't America trying to develop a weapons system that will allow them to fire their big guns from space? Or did I dream that?
