WW2 - The answer is simple the USA did indeed save our bacon, The UK fought like possesed demons as we held the Germans back from our beloved Islands for years while the USA "ummed" and "ahhed" and shuffled their feet, But when the US arrived they did indeed save the day for the Allies, and as they like to say "kicked ass"
Hitler admitted in 1941 that an attack on English soil would not be possible. The RAF had to be destroyed and he quite simply couldn't do that while at war in N.Africa and Russia. The Americans saved the rest of Europe from Russian occupation after WWII but the Russians saved Europe from the Germans, England was never really in any problems apart from politically.

Its true that I live next to FOUR ancient settlements that are taught as history here in the UK -

Jarlshof (neolithic from 4200 years ago!) http://www.shetland-museum.org.uk/colle … rlshof.htm

Then I have "old Scatness" which is from the Iron Age (1700 years ago)  http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/s … index.html

And Mousa Broch from 1900 years ago  http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/m … index.html

Then Finally my house has a great view of St ninan's Isle Chapel, an old Pagan Burial ground and medievil chapel.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Ninian's_Isle

all within 8 miles of my front door...

All of this history is taught at the local schools.... and it is but a fraction of 1% of British history... which is why I'd never heard of "1812" until I watched the program "Due South" in the early 1990's...
