People over there don't want a partial pullout. They want them gone for good. Out of the region.

Seems like there's just way too much revenge and religious intolerance for peace to happen. It's hard to say without first hand experience. And who the hell wants first hand experience in a place like that.

That would be as incredible as Israel leaving the OT.

Freedom and and human rights are superior to oppression. The culture of the middle east is decayed, dysfunctional, and unable to compete in the modern world. Can you imagine where they would be with out oil? They only want excuses for the the inadequacy of their social, political, and economic regimes. None of it's values like religious intolerance, economic blood ties, and the subjugation of women work anymore. Arab civilization has backed itself into a corner. It's humiliating to them and they are looking for someone to blame.
I don't agree with many aspects of Arabic culture and society but I don't feel we in the West have the right to tell them their society and ways are wrong. Many Muslims probably look at us and think that if our society has led us to where we are now on a spiritual level then they'd rather not adopt our ways thank you very much. Look at the US where an industry like the porn industry has never before been so celebrated in society. Little girls can buy Playboy pencil cases and lunch boxes. Britney Spears, who has a huge child fan base parades around on MTV wearing next to nothing in salacious videos while children copy her dance moves off the TV. The rap industry promotes philosophies like 'Get rich or die trying' and celebrates figure who make boasts of being pimps and 'gangsta's'. They probably see western society as having no soul anymore.

I like living in the West, I enjoy my way of life but I wouldn't force it on someone who held different views to mine.

And on a non cultural level take Afghanistan as an example. Its been invaded countless times but no one has ever been able to enforce their system of government on them. This is because the only system that has ever worked in Afghanistan is the tribal system that they don't appear to have any desire to give up. And it looks now like the US and Britain will be the latest in a long list of losers in that region.

And for the record the Muslim faith actually promotes tolerance of other religions, it is only more extreme interpretations of the faith that promote an 'us against them' attitude. Islam suffers from the fact that there is no Pope figure and many interpretations exist and thus many different levels of extremism.

QFT.

OTOH, you have to agree that a large part of the Israeli people arrived from European countries so having another culture played a significant role too.

Also take into consideration that before WWII Western influence, mainly UK, was a dominating factor in the whole region. These nations were not allowed independency for a long time, so they had a lot of catching up to do.
