He's committed to serving what he believes to be the best interests of his own people, stemming from the Cuban people's victory over the forces of Fulgencio Batista, corruption and international expolitation of the Cuban people and resources. While I will always condemn curbs on the freedom of speech I will say that the egalitarian society created in Cuba by Castro and co, which I visited last October, is a fine caring/sharing society. The impression I got was that most of the people of Cuba believe in the communist system so even if it were democratic communism would still reign.Fancy_Pollux wrote:
You're missing the point. He's committed to being stubborn!UGADawgs wrote:
That's the dumbest set of criteria I've ever seen. Just because you keep oppressing people for some ass-backwards cause doesn't make you a good man. Fidel Castro is just a stubborn old jackass who refuses to accept that Communism has failed. So many people criticize Bush for being stubborn, yet you praise Castro for basically being stubborn.CameronPoe wrote:
I think it's admiration based on:
a) His resilience and commitment to his cause;
b) The fact his 'heart' is in the right place even if the means of achieving his goals were less than salubrious in the immediate aftermath of the revolution;
c) His dogged bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity, where external powers continue to try and impose their will and force Cuba to conform to their norms.

I think he was a cunt and has mended his ways. He has watered down a lot of the rhetoric and hardline stances against dissenters in the past 20 years. The cuntishness in the aftermath of the overwhelmingly popular revolution was an unfortunate symptom of the international effort to crush the revolution in its infancy. The problem was that the regime had to adopt a siege mentality because of the rest of the world trying to impose their will on Cuba. So it's as much the fault of the west as it is the fault of Castro.TeamZephyr wrote:

Fidel himself stated that if they didn't like it they could get on rafts to Florida if they want, he wouldn't stop them.jessefer wrote:

That's funny because Binyamin Netanyahu is one of my candidates for worst human being ever. And strangely him and Nelson Mandela would be polar opposites: one who fought apartheid and one who supported apartheid. Rather contradictory selection.fadedsteve wrote:

We do have a reciprocal visa waiver scheme with the US so no, it shouldn't be too tough.fadedsteve wrote:

You are obviously going to think that living in Florida - where all the oligarchs and corrupt landed classes fled to when the revolution beat Batista out of the country. I was in Cuba - to a majority of them Che Guevara is like a God, along with José MartÃ. I heard some dissenting voices but most people there are supportive of the principles of communism and a great many have genuine adoration for Fidel. I do think many Cubans would like Cuba to be opened up a bit more but of course the US embargo kind of prevents that.jessefer wrote:

I can partly understand why some Americans may think Thatcher was good, due to lack of information; but anyone British should realise how bad her time was, and how much everyone rejoiced when she was OUT! Even now years later, Brits still talk about how she was one of the worst things to happen to this country.
As far as current Politicians, I can't say I respect any of them, I would like to see The Liberal Democrats in power, however we'll see if the ideals of rhetoric match the policies in action -- it'll be a first.
And finally... Tony Blair is a moron, he made have had some ideals, but he has been corrupted by power, and responsibility; and by his too close relationship with the Moronic American Government. I would be so embarrased by George W Bush, if I was American.
Neither, I wasn't old enough for either.SuperMike wrote:
