A paraplegic man wearing a soiled hospital gown and a broken colostomy bag was found crawling in a gutter in skid row in Los Angeles on Thursday after allegedly being dumped in the street by a Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center van, police said.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me … -headlines

Witnesses told police that the man propped himself up in the door of the van. He then hurled himself from the vehicle, tumbling to the street. He pulled himself along, dragging a bag of his belongings in his clenched teeth.

Police said several people began shouting at the driver, who in addition to applying makeup was more concerned that the seats of the van had been soiled, investigators said.
The Florida Hospital Association surveyed 28 hospitals and found that health care for illegal aliens totaled at least $40 million in 2002.

U.S. Marine Corps Captain David Brockett who served in Vietnam more than once between 1968 and 1974 e-mailed me his observation:

“The G.W. Bush decision to cut VA health care costs while funneling millions of dollars into health care for illegals is a kick in the gut. This decision is indicative of the ‘I appreciate your past service but what have you done for me today’ attitude that veteran's organizations fight each and every year.

“All veterans and their families are painfully aware of the uphill struggle to obtain medical services at Veteran's Affairs hospitals and clinics. We have to provide a ream of personal, financial, and military documentation just to get "in" the system. Once the information is validated then we are informed what our "share" of the medical expenses will be. If we submit the information in March, and we lose our job in April, we have to wait a full year for the VA to reassess our co-payment. With past funding cuts it is not unusual for a veteran to have to travel across several counties to reach a VA medical center.

“Meanwhile, the illegal simply presents himself to the nearest hospital for a complete smorgasbord of free medical services. This "squatter" enjoys all of the freedoms that the veteran has fought for, with none of the pain, suffering, or expenses associated with them…

“Several generations of this type of neglect has produced children of veterans who are cautioned against serving in the military. Simple solution to this problem is for our government representatives to receive the same health care services that veterans do. Let’s see how long they will be willing to rob Peter to pay Raoul.”

Well first off it sounds like he did this intentionally. Secondly I do agree, we need to drastically reduce the amount of health care illegal immigrants get, some our own citizens do not have adaquet health care but some illegal immigrants are getting health care paid for by the government, which makes no sense and ought to be changed.

If I was a crazy liberal conspiracy theorist, I'd say that all the money is going into the war and the illegal alien jack in media coverage is a Smoke Screen?

I as a business owner, I can put myself in your position ATG so your lively hood is on the front line of the immigration issue. Me sitting here thousands of miles away thinks that the US and particularly the southern states need to start investing in Mexico and try and bring their economy up to equal levels as the USA and Canada. Open up trade. Although that would be more like a 50 year plan, not a quick fix to the problem. Because as long as the USA's economy dwarfs Mexico they are going to keep on coming.

Excellent post, ATG.  The last part is especially powerful.

It just goes to show that this government really isn't worth dying for.  The War on Terror is a smokescreen for the interests of the military industrial complex.  Men and women are dying in Iraq, not for "national security", but for defense contractors.  This becomes painfully apparent in how much we spend on contractors that overcharge us, yet we don't have the funds for taking care of veterans.

My sister is in law enforcement in LA.  I saked her about this stuff.  She says the media is NOT telling the full side of the story......go figure.  Most of these guys want to leave and are hard to keep in the hospital.  As for the dumping, most of the people they interview are so drunk or messed up somehow it is not even considered legit.  Fact is, majority of these guys sneak out of the hospital because they cannot get drunk or high there.

I notice you've said nothing about the incident but merely posted direct quotes from other people.  Do you have a view other than that usmarine2007's sister is mistaken?

First off, what does this article and the rest of your post have in common?

Second, it's bad that many illegals are able to milk the system like that, but the purpose of an emergency room is to admit anyone with a medical emergency. If a person has an emergency, he shouldn't have to pull out documentation to get medical aid.

This is certainly how the ER works, but....  given the rising cost of healthcare due to illegals not paying their way, shouldn't documentation play a part at this point?

Unless we want to create a socialized system, a private one isn't going to last very long with a large number of people that don't pay their way.

So are you really saying that if an illegal runs into the emergency room bleeding profusely, the first thing we should check for is I.D? I'm not saying that we should be treating illegals for minor colds through the emergency room, but there's a point where the doctor's sole purpose is to save a life, whether it's one of an American citizen or an illegal alien.

That's a noble ideal and one that 99% of doctors would agree with, but unless we socialize healthcare, treating enough of these illegals will drive up costs to the point where only the rich will be able to afford it.  There are many hospitals in border towns that are feeling the pinch as this illegal problem worsens as well.

Basically, we're at a major turning point with regards to healthcare.

Either we need to be more vigilant in documentation enforcement or ready to fund a state or federal healthcare system.

Yes, its pretty obvious from what I chose to quote that I am clowning the federal governments border policy and Bushs claim to be the soldiers president.

It's well known my feeling about illegal immigration, that's why I didn't carry on about it.

I found the story, and connected it to the issue of illegal immigration. That was not part of the story I linked to, therefor the thread is my own work.
