Hey Cam you might be able to answer some questions.  Is tartan an Irish thing also?  If so, do the different tartans denote different clans/families as with Scottish ones?

No the Irish don't have tartan. Although our pipe bands do where kilts and sporrans. There's no 'family tartan' like there is in Scotland. We have family crests though.

And also - the thread isn't tongue in cheek and no I'm not hoping for a riot or intending to organise one if that's how it comes across. I'm just saying that there are elements out there like Republican Sinn Fein (not Sinn Fein - a more extreme version) and the 32 County Sovereignty Committee who'll just use this as an excuse for a fight. Rioting and fighting is not part of rugby culture but rugby fans won't be the ones spoiling for a fight.

Can we not learn from our past. What happened was wrong.

Or shall the British still fight the Germans because of WW2.

The Spanish fight the French because Napoleon

The Christians to restart the Crusades to retake the Holy lands

When would it all stop.

I think we're all big enough and mature enough to let the tans (that's an old affectionate Irish term for the British) lose to us at Rugby in Croke Park. The way i see it we're just continuing the age old tradition of Britain inventing sports and giving them to the rest of the world only to end up much worse than everyone else at said sports (i bet those British sailors regret giving those soccer balls to those Brazilian kids). I just hope they're not silly enough to pull that dumb-ass red carpet shit this time (last time they played at Lansdowne Road England lined up in the wrong position and refused to move before the game and made it so as our President had to walk on the grass instead of the Red carpet ...could you imagine if that was done to their precious queen!) otherwise there may be trouble; they have to show a little respect this time given the circumstances.

In a few weeks time England will be playing Ireland in a six-nations rugby match at Croke Park. Most English travelling fans will be oblivious to the history of the stadium and the significance of the event. I for one shudder to imagine the sickly thought of the British national anthem being played on that hallowed ground before the match. Dublin rioted not so long ago when the Orange Order came to Dublin to celebrate their 'culture'. I fear Dublin will again succomb to such violence. Watch this space.
No one is going to riot other than a few (maybe 5 or 10) hard core fans in a pub car park somewhere; and that will be more to do with the rugby than any political ideologies. The English opened fire on the crowd in retaliation to fourteen of their agents being assasinated by the Irish earlier that day. It's called Bloody Sunday by the way.

Rubbish. I used to attend the may day riots in London while I was at uni for no reason other than it was a laugh. My uni was just up the road from Oxford circus where the hippies/anarchists would congregate and we'd pop down at lunch to 'experience' it. Once we'd been rushed by the police horses and smoked some weed with the hippies we'd go back to our lectures. It was a fucking good laugh!

You may shoot the proper rioters though

There is a big difference in killing your occupiers in a war for Independence and driving armored cars around a sports field firing randomly into the crowd killing children. Are you suggesting thats this communal punishment was justified?

Bloody Sunday was not a 'War for Independence', more a small uprising, and an unsuccessful one to boot. I won't condone shooting children, I'll leave that to the americans, but really, and without wanting to sound childish, you did start it. It would be like me going to Ireland, picking a fight with your gypsies and then moaning when they kicked the shit out of me.

No, I'll think you'll find it was fought in Northern Ireland, a different country by the way and owned by the English. Oh and it still wasn't a war, not even part of one, it was part of the IRA terrorist campaign.

EDIT: Couldn't resist...it's 'Bloody' not Bloddy'....you kinda lost credibility there
