Many of the various Gnostic groups that developed shortly after Christ's death and alleged resurrection had very different interpretations of the books of the New Testament from what would eventually become Catholicism. Unfortunately, most of these groups were killed off by the Church.
In short, all of the sects of Christianity that currently exist could be very different from what Christ actually intended. Maybe the Gnostics had a better explanation for why God seems so indifferent to the world (at least if God exists in the first place).
