I was having a discussion today with a couple of people, and talking about Iran, when someone mentioned that the 'quote' that Ahmedinejad said about wiping Israel off the map was untrue, and mistranslated. I did a little bit of research and what I found was that he infact said was, "The Imam [Khomeini] said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time". Surprisingly, it was an Iranian source that translated it into English as that. I'm sure all the other news agencies translated it as well, but I figure it's more convenient for them to keep the translation as that.

Anyway, it's kinda interesting to see how things like that happen, and why we should be careful when we read/hear statements like that that have been translated. Not too sure what you guys can discuss, but I figured some of you may be interested to hear that.

No idea about the validity of the source, but it seems accurate enough, with no glaring bias'.

According to the article, he hasn't ever bothered to confirm or deny that's what he said; he just dodges the question.

Yet another case of horrible mis-quotation.

Not that Ahmadinejad isn't a radical nutcase.

Find one.

He's done a lot of other stupid stuff though. Holocaust denial is probably his biggest faux pas.

(1) = 0, intersting math isn't it.

(2) = 0, as well - Zero-brains* that is.

* = Ahmedinejad.

Seems as if Ahmedinejad's propaganda campaign has gotten to the BF2s population.

All heil Mahmoud Ahmadinejad! He cured aids! He proved the holocaust wasn't real! He's providing peaceful nuclear energy to the masses!

Funny how the only people who will buy into this crap are the most outspoken anti-US users on this forum. "I don't care what Ahmadinejad says or does, I'm on his side because he hates the US like me". It's a sad and simple observation, but a true one.

I think not. I, and I'm sure the rest of the BF2S community, am sure of the fact that Ahmadinejad is a complete nutter, whose presence in government is detrimental not only to the development of Iran, but also to the surrounding region and to some extent the rest of the world.

That said, I do not feel the same way about Iran. I know a lot of Iranians and have Iranian family, the radical extremism ideology does not typify Iranian society which, in my experience, has quite a reformist attitude.

I do, however, find this mis-quotation quite amusing. Mainly for the reason that I've heard dozens, possibly hundreds of people quoting Ahmadinejad as having stated that he wants Israel wiped off the map and using that as justification for all sorts of attrocities. The fact that he has never actually said that (which I wouldn't be at all suprised if he has on another occasion, but the fact he hasn't confirmed or denied his original statement suggests that is not the case), I find quite funny.

You've all been propaganda'd!

And just to be clear, I think Ahmadinejad is a cunt who has based his success on propaganda aimed at the Iranian people, designed to boost his support and bolster hatred of the US. I support the Iranian reformist movements led by people like Rafsanjani, Karroubi and Moeen (although they are not without their own faults).

OK. When the Islamic messiah turns up I'll start worrying. Till then I'll treat Ahmadinejad with the [extreme sarcasm] deep respect [/extreme sarcasm] he deserves.

Sounds like more atypical religious rhetoric - so what.

It sounds like he is saying - your own anger (the US; at Iran); will be your own undoing; and your own actions are against God (Allah; I guess by their name) ... and you will die soon... blah blah religious rhetoric.

If he is talking about the US withering away - all of a sudden - that is a pretty stupid thing to say. Even if it is just atypical rhetoric (a Muslim defiant tone) voiced in defiance against current US policy.

This type of rhetoric and this war on terror is NOT something new... that just popped into existence in 2001.
"Death to America" a little history:
http://www.danielpipes.org/article/460
You know there is a certain amount of hypocrisy here. We are told that we need to be sensitive to their views and not take them at their word when they chant "death to America". Are we supposed to believe that they are so ignorant as to not understand how this is interpreted here? It seems a little one sided. God forbid you make a cartoon about their religion.

You know from what I have seen the Iranians are one of the most complicated societies in the region. When ever I hear the far right guys talk about invasion or "the bomb" I can't help but think, are we supposed to wipe 30 million people off the map that would like to be closer to America do to the idiotic remarks and actions of a few? Iran is starting to show discontent with their leaders, lets watch what happens internally.

A crumbling economy is doing it's job as well. If Saudi Arabia turns up oil production the Iranians are screwed. It cost them much more to get their oil out of the ground. If I were Iran I would stop screwing with the pro Saudi government in Lebanon.

That's complete crap. I don't buy into anything he's saying, nor am I on his side at all, I merely wanted to bring attention to the actual translation of the text. I would hardly call myself 'anti-US' either, I'm sure if you asked some of the slightly saner, and infinitely more useful than your good self, members of the forum, I would think they'd agree.

Settle down sweet-cheeks. I wasn't referring to you in that post. Notice I even included your quote saying he dodges the question.

Thought I'd heard somewhere that he didn't "deny" that it happened, but that it didn't happen as badly as are written in history books.

People take people's comments to the extreme too often.  To relate, it's like saying that someone who thinks that the stories in the bible are just that, stories, would be called a "Bible denier".
