WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Employment Policies Institute [EPI] is running a full-page ad in the Washington Post asking the public to rethink the notion that minimum wage hikes are a good idea. The timing of the ad coincides with the introduction of federal legislation to hike the minimum wage by over 40 percent.
    The ad reads:
Think Raising the Minimum Wage is a Good Idea?

'The reason I object to the minimum wage is I think it destroys jobs, and
I think the evidence on that, in my judgment, is overwhelming.'
-- Alan Greenspan, Former Federal Reserve Chairman

'The high rate of unemployment among teenagers, and especially black
teenagers,* is both a scandal and a serious source of social unrest.  Yet
it is largely a result of minimum wage laws.'
-- Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist

'In some cases the effective marginal tax rate [on a minimum wage
increase] exceeds 100 percent and the price of earning extra income may be
to leave one's family worse off than previously.'
-- David Shaviro, New York University

'Even a wizard would have a great deal of difficulty repealing the
economic law that higher minimum wages reduce employment. Since
politicians are not wizards, they should not try.'
-- Gary Becker, Nobel Prize-winning economist

    Think Again.
'It is a huge misconception that raising the minimum wage is a viable anti-poverty tool and that low-income families will see a large benefit from a hike,' said Dr. Jill Jenkins, EPI's Chief Economist. 'The public needs to understand what economists have known for over half a century: raising the minimum wage jeopardizes the jobs of those with low skills who need the help the most.'

*According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics December Jobs Report, African American teen unemployment is 26.2 percent.

I saw something about how the bill got passed over to the House with a "you got to provide provisions for a tax break for the companies that hire minimum wage workers".

So let's give them a raise but then we'll give a tax break to the companies to deter inflation?

So where'd the tax burden go?

The customer? The employee?  The company?

Who's gonna pay when the new tax rates hit?

Paying people more empowers them. No goverment wants its citizens too empowered

Did you read above?  People improving their skills to earn a better paying job empowers them. Paying them higher minimum wage does not empower, rather it only heightens the possibility of their job being eliminated.

Very good points...  It's a tough call....

I've often considered the idea of repealing the minimum wage itself.  Theoretically, letting the market clear itself would resolve a certain amount of unemployment.

What complicates the minimum wage issue is illegal labor.  Minimum wage or not, illegals drive wages down for low skill jobs.

More than anything else, education will help our poor.  We need to spend a lot more on education -- whether through public education or through completely privatizing education.  Either way, we need to develop more technical schools for the less academic students in our country.  We seem to be running things under the delusion that everyone should be an English teacher or a history professor.  A lot of disciplinary problems and unemployment would be solved by teaching less scholarly kids a trade.  Some kids really do prefer to do something with their hands rather than reading books by dead white guys.

As soon as we properly educate our blue collar workers and future blue collar laborers, they'll have the necessary skills to get jobs that most illegals can't fill.  Then, most unemployment and wage issues will resolve themselves through the market.

Nice post. If raising the minimum wage actually worked, then why not raise it to $50,000 a year? The people who support raising the minimum wage are usually also the ones who go on and on about the wonderful "free" healthcare we should all have. ( i.e. - paid for by you and me ) These are nice talking points for the democrats to bring up in elections. "Well, vote for me and I'll give you more money and you can go to the doctor for free!". Unfortunately, most people in America today are sheep and won't be bothered to actually look into anything for themselves.

Well, kingrat, I definitely agree with that last sentence.

With all the talk about healthcare and the minimum wage, education should really be the big issue nowadays.
