Since the surgeon general called for the banning of smoking in public places in New York, alot of states have followed suit. To an extent my state has also. Except for bars, most resteraunts/bowling alleys have banned smoking. Soon the bars will ban them too.

My point of discussion, this "law" states no SMOKING. So everyone is ok with people who "chew" or "spit" tobbacco, bringing a empty coke bottle into a resteraunt and spitting his tobbacco goo into it while you eat?

It has no second hand smoke and doesn't directly affect you, so this is allowed? Personally if I wasn't a smoker, I'd rather have smokers across the resteraunt in thier own area, than a fellow sitting right next to me spitting into a bottle.

Your thoughts?

while i can understand banning smoking in state owned property (schools, town hall, etc.), i find that banning it in "public areas" just pathetic. if i dont like people smoking around me, i just dont go to that particular restaurant/bar. if there really are so many people that want non smoking restaurants, i'm sure that a market for these will also exist. no need for government intervention
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I think smoking at restaurants are really nasty but I see your point with the chewing thing.
That shouldn't be allowed either.

Better yet, find a swedish friend and have some:

well, some places have put bans on chewing tobacco as well they call it "smokeless tobacco". you could probably get away with it until someone at the next table complained about it. Also, you can't dip on airplanes either, but my friends do it.

Uh, people won't automatically start chewing tobacco if smoking is banned. I live in Norway, where smoking in public places has been banned for a while. People either smoke in their homes, cars, when they walk from A to B, or not at all.

I think everyone I know that chews has done that once.

Tip: Drinking in a a bar while spitting into a seperate bottle, its no good after the 10th beer.

In response to original post I think smokeless tobacco is just as nasty as far as restaurant use and should be included in the ban.


For a swig from a spit cup I have witnessed that one first hand in back in High School days probably around 1986 in a class a guy was spitting into one of those plastic Coke bottles with the screw-on plastic cap it was full of "chew spit" and pretty much looked like a full bottle of Coke to the unknowing eye except for most of the class who was watching the guy spit in it every 30 seconds or so.

So a minute before class starts this other guy in the class comes running in almost late and been running a little while, he sees the "full" bottle grabs it off the desk unscrews the cap and proceeds to swig a few gulps down before he realizes all is not as it seems...of course at this time all the other students are laughing hysterically. As the "spitter" guy is saying "Do you want some fresh chew?"

As for the drinker I've yet to see another person turn that shade of green as I saw that day without the use of movie stage makeup.
