There is no doubt that America's stance on civil rights and equality for all races has improved tremendously. And it's true that there is still a long ways to go to resolve racist issues.
One threat to civil liberties now is the hypocrisy in so many things geared to favor blacks (or African Americans, just to make it sound politically correct). On tests (AP) there's always a little box to fill in if "you are of African American descent." Black people call themselves the n-word so much it seems normal. Then when some non-black person says the same thing, they're branded as racists. Going even further, I always hear people, not only blacks, using the term "cracker" to describe a white person, but no one gets angry with that. Affirmative Action, althought with a noble cause, is racist in that it allows a less qualified person to enter a competitive college than another well-qualified candidate, based on his race. I've always had an issue with Black History Month, why aren't there other months dedicated to other races? There are other races that have been treated with the same brutality, if not more, yet their plights aren't known to many people.I do believe this is fixable, not now, but in the future. People need to stop classifying by race.
Another issue I have is that people tend to gloss over the faults or mertis of a race. MLK Jr's protests may have been peaceful and nonviolent, but can the same be said about Malcom X? I feel that it is important not only to observe the good, but also the bad of anything, in order to create a less biased opinion on something. Yet, we barely learn/hear about Malcom X. Further, people condemn the "white man" for all the problems of the minorities today, but overlook what the "white man" has done to help out the minorities. Despite this, minorities continue to blame them.
The only way to fix this would be when people discard their racial prejudice, or at least learn to live with it. Not neccesarily like it, but live with it.
